Little things can turn an ordinary day around, like a kind word, an unexpected laugh, an adorable animal, or a ridiculously cute picture that catches us at exactly the right moment. We may not be able to fix everything that is weighing on us, but a tiny burst of joy can still make the day feel a little lighter.
So we’ve rounded up a collection of sweet, funny, and heartwarming memes that feel like a little ray of sunshine on your screen. Grab your favorite snack, settle in, and see how many of these put a smile on your face.

You know that feeling when you’re scrolling without really paying attention, and then one completely ridiculous meme makes you stop and laugh? It might be a silly picture, or a hilarious but relatable joke. These little bursts of amusement can actually affect how we see and respond to the world around us.
Research on positive emotions has found that feeling good can broaden our attention and help us notice more possibilities. So that random meme that just made you smile may have given your brain a good change of scenery.

Laughter is basically the brain’s way of throwing open the windows and letting some fresh air in. According to the Mayo Clinic, laughing can help trigger the release of endorphins, which can reduce stress and help your body relax.
Even better, the clinic specifically notes that quietly giggling at a meme counts. So the next time you catch yourself laughing at a picture of a dog doing absolutely nothing extraordinary, you can consider it a very small wellness appointment.

A laugh is even better when you have someone to share it with. Research published in Personal Relationships found that couples who laughed together more also tended to feel closer and more supported.
When you share a funny meme with a friend, you are both laughing over the same ridiculous thing, even if you’re miles apart. These tiny shared moments can make people feel a little more connected, which may be part of why we are so quick to tag a friend when we find a meme that is just too good not to pass along.

Experts have looked into what happens when we see adorable images, and one study found that people performed certain tasks more carefully after looking at pictures of puppies and kittens.
This suggests that cuteness narrows our attention, making it easier to focus on tasks and perform them better. So the next time a tiny puppy meme steals a few seconds of your attention, it might leave you a little more focused for whatever you do next.

A big part of what makes a funny meme even better is being able to see yourself in it. You see a joke about putting off a task for three hours, overthinking a text that probably did not need that much analysis, being way too excited to stay home, or getting irrationally attached to a fictional character, and suddenly you’re thinking, “Wait, why is this so accurate?”
It feels good to realize that other people have the same weird little habits and thoughts you do. Relatable memes have a way of making us feel less alone, even when all they’ve done is turn our everyday nonsense into a picture.

A good meme can take something annoying or stressful and make it feel a bit easier to handle. The American Psychological Association notes that people who viewed funny memes reported more positive emotions and less stress.
Think about how different it feels to complain about a terrible day compared with seeing a meme that perfectly captures the chaos and thinking, “Well, at least this is funny.” The problem is still there, but laughing at it can make it feel a little less overwhelming.

Once something puts us in a better mood, we may be more open to whatever comes next. Psychologists describe positive emotions as having a “broadening” effect, meaning they can make us more open-minded and engaged with what is happening around us.
A few minutes spent laughing at memes may give you a pleasant little reset before you get back to the rest of your day. It is hardly a substitute for solving your problems, but there is nothing wrong with giving yourself a moment to enjoy something that makes you smile.

We tend to think happiness has to come from something big, but a lot of it lives in the little moments we almost miss. Harvard Health explains that taking time to appreciate small, pleasurable moments can make us feel happier, whether it is enjoying a good book, laughing with someone we love, or simply pausing to enjoy something that makes us smile.
A silly meme might seem like a tiny thing in the grand scheme of life, but that is kind of the point. We do not need every moment to be meaningful or life-changing. Sometimes, a few seconds of pure amusement are more than enough.

These memes give us a reason to pause and let our brains wander somewhere a little lighter for a moment. So, as you scroll through these gems, keep an eye out for the one that makes you grin the widest.
Which meme made your day a little better, and what is the funniest or sweetest meme you have come across lately? Drop it in the comments and give the rest of us another reason to smile!

share read star Blood Test Reveals The Heartbreaking Truth After Millennial Dad Keeps Finding Weird Bruises All Over His BodySaturday 12 September 2026 - 01:03from Bored Panda
Sometime in late 2025, Reese Willard, 40, a father of one from Dallas, Texas, started experiencing extreme fatigue and difficulty falling asleep.
At first, Reese and his wife, Sarah, 39, did not think much of it.
After a few weeks, when more symptoms showed up, the couple sought help from ChatGPT, which offered a temporary but uncertain diagnosis.
But it wasn’t until Reese found himself covered in big, purple bruises after a 27-mile hike that he visited the hospital.
What the doctors told them turned their life upside down overnight.
“I knew this was going to be way worse than what we thought,” Sarah later said on social media.
Reese and Sarah initially ignored what they assumed were seemingly harmless conditions

After the initial fatigue, Reese began experiencing night sweats, rapid weight loss, bleeding gums, and an overall deterioration in health, Sarah told Newsweek in September 2026.
He also developed a cluster of red dots on the side of his body, and Sarah pressed a glass to the skin to see if it blanched. Then she took a photo of the area and asked ChatGPT to analyze it.
The AI said that it looked like petechiae, tiny, pinpoint red, purple, or brown spots on the skin caused by minor bleeding from broken capillaries.

The couple felt relieved, believing it was nothing too concerning, and moved on. Then came the real blow.
Six weeks later, Reese, who loved being outdoors, went for a 27-mile hike and came back with “fist-sized bruises all over his body, but they were way beyond what that level of activity would have caused.
“They were all up and down his legs, arms, and torso,” Sarah said.

When she shared photos of his bruises on the same ChatGPT thread, it said that Reese needed to go to urgent care immediately.
In a July 2026 post on her TikTok, Sarah revisited the moment, saying, “As he left for Urgent Care, I felt like life was about to change and that I needed to ‘prepare.’ I called to warn my sister. I started cleaning, wrapping up work, running errands, etc.”
“I bought our daughter a new toy to cheer her up even though nothing had happened yet.”
Reese’s hospital visit led to concerning blood reports and eventually, a cancer diagnosis

At the hospital, lab reports showed his complete blood count was alarmingly erratic, and his platelet count had dropped to 5,000. They admitted him immediately and ran more tests to reach a definitive diagnosis.
Sarah shared a screenshot of her text conversation with Reese on TikTok, where he gave her that information, and she wrote back in shock, “REESE, FIVE? Are you joking?”
The next morning, the doctors told him that 87% of his white blood cells were myeloblasts, a common indicator of leukemia, and conducted a bone marrow biopsy.

When the results came back, Reese and Sarah found out that he had acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a common type of blood cancer in which the bone marrow makes a large number of abnormal blood cells.
According to the National Cancer Institute, AML comes with a 33.4% 5-year survival rate and is estimated to cause 11,500 fatalities in 2026.
After the diagnosis, Reese was transferred to Baylor University Medical Center to begin intensive chemotherapy.

“AML is so aggressive that they usually have to stabilize the patient and begin treatment immediately,” Sarah told Newsweek.
Once they had all the details, Sarah had to quickly arrange childcare and coordinate with her employer to support Reese.
Things turned for the worse for Reese before his cancer went into remission

Soon, the hospital became Sarah’s “second home,” where she could “abandon all responsibilities and focus on” Reese. But the worst was yet to come.
On Thanksgiving, Reese had gone into septic shock from E.coli flooding his bloodstream, which Sarah was told was one of the gravest complications that arise from leukemia, and he was taken into the ICU.

“The ICU, on Thanksgiving, was like The Twilight Zone,” she continued. “The waiting room was full of strangers with tears on their faces, in hope or despair. All of our complex realities intertwined, silently, in an ICU waiting room.”
A couple of days later, Reese’s recovery hit another roadblock as a communication lapse in the ward led to a medication not being administered while Sarah had gone to a hotel to rest.

However, 30 days later, just three days before his 40th birthday, Reese finally walked out, holding hands with their daughter. But the battle wasn’t won yet.
Just before Christmas 2025, they went to MD Anderson Cancer Center for a second opinion and learned that Reese was “in complete remission and no stem cell transplant was needed.”

He continued consolidation therapy at Baylor, receiving four more rounds of chemotherapy and several platelet and blood transfusions, before finally getting to ring the bell on May 17, 2026.
“For anyone facing this diagnosis, focus on your mental state,” Reese told Newsweek. “Try not to dwell on the ‘why me?’ thoughts because each day will be a different battle that needs your undivided attention.”
“This just gave me so much hope,” one reader said

share read star Perez Hilton’s Recovery Takes A Sad New Turn, Following Reports Of Permanent “Disfigurement”Saturday 12 September 2026 - 00:02from Bored Panda
More than a month after Perez Hilton was hospitalized following a mental health crisis, the celebrity blogger is struggling to get his life back on track.
The 48-year-old is reportedly still struggling to process what happened on August 4, when he self-inflicted severe injuries that may leave him with permanent scarring.
Now, another problem has followed him into treatment.
Hilton has been trying to sell his Las Vegas home while dealing with mounting financial pressure, and the property has undergone a $350,000 asking-price reduction, falling to $3.9 million.
Perez Hilton lowered the price of his house as he deals with mounting financial pressure

Hilton, born Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., has been receiving psychiatric treatment since the August 4 incident. While information about his current treatment has become increasingly limited, family members and people close to Hilton have suggested he remains far from ready to return home.
“One minute he’s thinking about moving forward and making plans for when he’s back at work. The next minute he’s talking about walking away altogether,” one source said.

According to the same account, Hilton has struggled with feelings of isolation and regret as he begins confronting the consequences of what happened.
“He feels very isolated at the moment, very alone,” the source explained. “He’s being really hard on himself, regretting all these things that he has done and where life is now. He’s despondent. He’s nowhere near ready to get out. He’s got a very, very long way to go.”
That assessment echoes earlier comments from people close to him, who warned shortly after his hospitalization that his mental state remained unstable.
“He doesn’t have a lot of presence of mind,” one friend told the Daily Mail in August. “He’s not able to fully process what happened.”
Asked how long it might take Hilton to recover, the person rejected the idea that his condition would stabilize within days.
“This is not going to be something where in five days, I’m like, ‘He’s fine,’” they said. “This is months, maybe years.”
Hilton’s sister Barbara has similarly described the process ahead as a long one.
His injuries may leave him with permanent physical changes

Sources said his injuries required extensive stitching and are expected to leave him with significant scarring.
The reports align with Barbara’s earlier account of the crisis, when she described trying to stop her brother from losing a dangerous amount of blood before emergency responders arrived.
The incident took place while Barbara was at Hilton’s residence with his three children, Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8.
Viewers watching Hilton’s livestream became alarmed by what they were seeing and contacted authorities, while Barbara also became concerned after her brother locked himself inside his bedroom.

She eventually gained access and found him in the shower with severe self-inflicted injuries and a cutting tool in his hand.
“I didn’t recognize him when I looked at him,” she later recalled. “I saw it in his eyes. They didn’t look the same.”
Barbara’s immediate priority became getting the children away from the scene. She took them to a friend’s home before returning to help her brother and attempting to control his bleeding until authorities arrived.
His mother has temporarily taken legal custody of his three children

Hilton’s recovery has also required major changes for his children.
Court documents obtained by TMZ on August 20 showed that his mother, Teresita Lavandeira, had been granted temporary legal custody of the three children Hilton welcomed via surrogacy.
The order gives Teresita authority over decisions involving their medical care, school enrollment and other matters related to their welfare while Hilton remains unable to resume his parental responsibilities.

Hilton reportedly consented to the arrangement as well as restrictions governing his contact with the children.
Under the order, he must receive psychiatric clearance before meeting with them, and any visits must take place under the supervision of either a relative or therapist.
Other portions of the case remain sealed. The judge determined that maintaining confidentiality was necessary to protect the children while their father continues treatment.
The crisis followed an already brutal year for Hilton’s health
The August incident came after Hilton had already endured several serious health scares during 2026.
In March, he spent 21 days recovering from sepsis, an experience he later admitted left him fearing for his life.
“I thought I was gonna d**,” he told Fox News while discussing the hospitalization.
Hilton said his condition deteriorated dramatically while doctors monitored him.
“Everything that could go wrong went wrong,” he recalled.

During that hospitalization, Hilton said he developed fluid in his lungs, experienced heart complications and underwent two surgeries.
Only weeks afterward, doctors discovered a deep vein thrombosis, or blood clot, in one of his legs. Hilton later told his followers that he was grateful the condition had been detected before the clot could travel to his heart or lungs, where the consequences could have been much more serious.
Those medical problems had already placed enormous strain on him before the events of August.
Financial pressure was reportedly building before his hospitalization

Money had also become a concern.
Reports surrounding Hilton’s recovery have claimed he was already facing financial difficulties before the livestream, and his family eventually relaunched the Perez Hilton website while he remained hospitalized in an effort to keep his business operating.
Now, the mounting cost of treatment has reportedly become another source of anxiety.

Against that backdrop, Hilton has been trying to sell the Las Vegas property where he previously lived with his family. They have not occupied the home since June, and Hilton had publicly discussed leaving Nevada even before his current hospitalization.
The property includes six en-suite bedrooms, a detached casita, a multigenerational suite and a resort-style backyard. It originally entered the market at $4.25 million.
That asking price has since been reduced by $350,000 to $3.9 million.

Nature and everyday life have a funny way of accidentally recreating the deli counter. A rough stone can sometimes look like a freshly baked loaf of sourdough, while a piece of raw calcite might pass for crispy fried chicken.
In the online world, these deceptively appetizing objects are known as “forbidden food,” and an entire community is dedicated to spotting these bizarre visual traps.
To save you from a very confusing trip to the emergency room, we have collected some images from the group — they might be a total feast for your eyes, but definitely not for your stomach.

Humans are not born with a full manual on what to eat. At birth, our brains come pre-programmed with only a few basic survival instincts. A 1981 study by BJ Cowart found that human newborns automatically prefer sweet tastes and naturally reject bitter or harsh flavors. Beyond those basic reactions, young children treat the world around them as an open menu.
Learning what not to eat is actually one of the biggest lessons of early childhood.

As children grow, they build on that minimal biological base through personal experience, parental guidance, and cultural rules. By adulthood, their brains rely on a well-established set of mental categories to separate safe meals from dangerous chemicals.
However, non-edible items can easily trick those mental categories when they share the same physical traits as real food.
In a 1983 study by April Fallon and Paul Rozin, researchers examined the psychological basis for how humans reject or accept potential foods. They found that people rely heavily on sensory factors — such as how an object looks, smells, and feels — to make split-second decisions about edibility.

Cultural learning and cognitive knowledge can sometimes override our basic visual instincts.
When you see a colorful glass marble or a bar of scented soap, your eyes send an initial signal that the object looks attractive and similar to candy or fruit. A fraction of a second later, your learned knowledge reminds you that the item is made of glass or soap. That brief overlap between what your eyes see and what your memory knows is precisely why certain non-food items can look so surprisingly appetizing.

When we look at food, our minds move much faster than our mouths. In just a fraction of a second, the brain scans an item, guessing how it might taste, whether it is safe, and how familiar it feels. We are naturally drawn to food because eating triggers a rush of dopamine — the brain’s feel-good chemical that controls reward and motivation.
So, when something looks delicious, our visual system instantly perks up.
This isn’t just about hunger. It’s about memory, pleasure, and even survival instincts.

Naturally, several major brands have realized this instinct and decided to use it to their advantage — because why wouldn’t they?
Products like cosmetics, personal care items, and household goods are deliberately designed to mimic food and catch our eye. You can see this in shower gels, shampoos, body lotions, soaps, and even dishwashing liquids that look like gourmet treats.
For example, Lush Cosmetics has built an entire brand identity around making soaps that look identical to macaroons, cupcakes, and blocks of cheese, often displaying them on fresh ice or deli counters.
Tree Hut has gone viral for body scrubs that look like colorful Italian ice and smell like birthday cake or cotton candy. Even beauty brands like TonyMoly package their hand creams and lip balms in containers shaped like real peaches and bananas, while cleaning brands like Method use vibrant fruit shades and sweet citrus scents to make dish soap look as inviting as a summer drink.

This trend is a much bigger shift in how we shop and scroll online.
From viral TikTok coffee builds to perfectly lit Instagram pastries, food content consistently gets some of the highest views, saves, and shares across every platform. People just love looking at things that look delicious.
At the same time, visual storytelling has become essential. When you have only a fraction of a second to stop someone from scrolling past your post, food-inspired visuals act as instant shorthand. It catches the eye immediately and tells a relatable story without needing a single word of text.

This visual confusion can be quite harmful, especially to young children who don’t know any better.
Pediatric foreign body ingestion is a major medical issue. In fact, over 50,000 cases involving children under five are reported every single year to the US National Poison Data System alone. Young kids explore the world with their hands and mouths, making food-like household products an easy target.

Surprisingly, even teens and adults aren’t entirely spared either.
Do you remember the infamous Tide Pod Challenge back in 2018? It started as an internet meme and quickly turned into a bizarre social media craze where people deliberately bit into liquid laundry packets on camera.
It began when people started joking that Tide Pods naturally looked like candy — their bright squishy swirls, glossy finish, and bite-sized weight mimic soft gummy treats.
This strong visual trick, combined with viral peer pressure, led to hundreds of accidental and intentional poisonings. It even forced poison control centers to issue emergency warnings and manufacturers to redesign their packaging.

While eating non-edible stuff is a bad idea, looking at it is surprisingly fun. Our brains are hardwired to love visually appealing, colorful, and glossy things — and there is zero harm in appreciating a bar of soap that belongs in a bakery display.
So, enjoy this feast for your eyes and don’t forget to keep these tasty-looking treats strictly off your plate.

Most of us are bombarded with ads wherever we look. They pop up persistently while we’re scrolling, sneak into our takeout orders, or interrupt our sports viewing mid-play. Most of the time, they’re at least a little annoying—unwelcome bids for our attention (and hard-earned money). But every so often, we’re blessed with an ad that’s truly masterful. I’m talking about the kinds of ads that are so brilliantly (and seemingly effortlessly) executed that we don’t mind giving them our attention. Often, they stick with us long after the fact, too.
The ads featured here certainly aren’t ones we’ll forget in a hurry. But they didn’t earn that distinction through witty copy or clever creative. It’s their placement or some other unfortunate decision that does the work, landing somewhere so wrong it loops back around to feeling hilariously and sometimes painfully right—so much so that you can’t tell if it’s an HR headache or the smartest PR move a brand ever made.

Whether we realize (or like) it or not, advertising has become an ever-present part of our modern lives. From the moment we open our eyes for our morning scroll (admit it, you do it too) till we shut off whatever we’re watching at night, we come across ads in all sorts of places. There’s that pop-up you’ve closed for the bazillionth time, the commercial break in your favorite podcast, the billboard on your way to work, or even the ad carefully disguised as a free recipe in your online grocery shopping haul.

But while these forms of advertising might seem distinctly modern, Alison Hahn, PhD, reminds us that advertisements “can be traced back to the oldest human communities,” with examples found “in Egyptian ruins, in the ashes of Pompeii, and in Mayan cities.” Of course, advertising has become considerably more ubiquitous since then: some estimates suggest that the average American is exposed to thousands of ads every day, with that number increasing considerably over the past few decades.

The reason for making ads has arguably remained pretty constant—to capture our attention and, ultimately, persuade us to buy (or buy into) something—but what’s changed is that the various forms advertising takes have multiplied. Whereas early modern advertisements often took the form of words and images printed on paper, either as part of a newspaper or as advertisements posted in community settings, advertising changed, Hahn explains, “with the development of new printing technologies, as well as other communicative media such as the radio and television, and later the Internet.”

#12 The Irony In This Photo

© Photo: Arcade_Maggot_Bones
Each new medium has brought with it new possibilities for where, when, and how brands can reach us. Radio and television allowed advertisers to incorporate sound, movement, timing, and programming context into their campaigns, while the Internet—and all that came with it—opened up an entirely new world of possibilities. Suddenly, ads didn’t have to be static messages aimed at a broad audience. They could be tailored to particular groups and delivered directly to people based on their interests and online behavior.

As Derek D. Rucker and Tim Calkins write for the Harvard Business Review, “With new technological advancements happening every day—better customer segmentation abilities, automation tools, new social media platforms—marketers have the opportunity to share their ideas more widely and expand their audiences, perhaps more than ever.”
With all these new opportunities, however, the challenge for marketers now becomes getting people to actually pay attention to what they’re putting in front of them. We’re often described as living in an “attention economy,” and that’s because, as Emilia Kirk writes for Forbes, “Attention is a finite resource.”

#18 Welcome To El Paso, TX

© Photo: AwarenessRough5444
We might be exposed to thousands upon thousands of ads each day, Kirk explains, but “The average human brain is simply incapable of processing such a bombardment of content.” That means that we ignore or very quickly forget about the vast majority of ads that we encounter. What this means for advertisers is that they have to find increasingly effective ways to stand out from the noise.

#21 Unfortunate Ad Placement

And when it comes to standing out, these ads certainly managed to do just that. Whether their unfortunate placements or other dubious design decisions were a stroke of marketing genius is highly debatable—and, frankly, highly unlikely. But they sure made us stop, look, do a double take, laugh, and cringe. And in a landscape where the average ad barely registers, perhaps that’s the one metric that actually matters.

Animals can be surprisingly clever. They can communicate in complex ways, find their way across huge distances and pick up on sounds or smells that humans barely notice. With abilities like that, you’d think they’d be pretty good at staying out of trouble.
But sometimes, curiosity gets the better of them. One questionable decision later, they crawl somewhere they shouldn’t or seriously overestimate what they can squeeze through and end up stuck. Luckily, people are usually around to help them out. Not without collecting some hilarious photographic evidence first, of course.

share read star “This Is Fresh Hell”: 90 Photos That Prove The USA Has Reached Disturbing Levels Of DystopiaSaturday 12 September 2026 - 00:00from Bored Panda
At one point, the American Dream was an aspiration for many, both in the United States and beyond. These folks envisioned the quintessential image of owning a home, raising a family, having a stable career, and securing a comfortable retirement.
These days, that dream is becoming less and less achievable. A chunk of people wouldn’t even consider the US a place to live, perhaps because life on the ground seems to mimic scenes from a Black Mirror episode. And the following photos may just prove that.
We collected these images from different corners of Reddit. Scroll through to see how troublesome things have apparently gotten.

Divisiveness has plagued America in recent years, and that’s no secret. People have allegiances to the left and the right and have pretty much declared the other their sworn enemy.
That societal division has also taken a toll on people’s health and well-being. According to a 2025 survey by the American Psychological Association, 62% of adults say the polarization has caused significant stress in their lives.

The survey also found that most US adults are more stressed about the country’s future than before. 63% of younger adults and 53% of parents have considered relocating to another country because of the nation's tumultuous state.
And when asked what words they would use to represent America today, 38% said corruption, 36% said division, and 32% said fear.

Homelessness is another problem that many Americans face. Recent statistics reveal that over 745,000 people have experienced homelessness, which equates to 22 people per 10,000 residents.
According to journalist and anthropologist Brian Goldstone, the people roaming the streets are just “the tip of the iceberg.”

As Goldstone tells PBS, homeless people aren’t just those who are often seen sleeping outside the parking lot of a convenience store. Others appear like functioning members of society.
“It's often the very cashier worker stocking the shelves in those stores. And they often have children at the end of their shifts,” he said. “They don't know where they're going. They have to tell their children, ‘I don't know where we're staying tonight.’ Maybe they're sleeping in a car in that very parking lot.”

Yet, despite the doom and gloom, many Americans remain hopeful about the future.
According to a June Gallup poll, people across the political spectrum largely agree that government reform, system changes, and equal rights are necessary to make the American dream achievable again in the next 50 years.

Being embarrassed is a prerequisite of the human condition, yet each of us finds different things embarrassing. For example, one poll found that most Americans consider forgetting someone’s name the most embarrassing blunder. 22% disagree and say that the most embarrassing thing a person can do is forget their partner’s birthday.
If we’re lucky, our embarrassing blunders don’t get posted online. These folks weren’t so lucky; their cringy fails became the subject of online ridicule. Still, Bored Panda invites you to have a chuckle or two at their expense, as you scroll through the moments that had the rest of the Internet facepalming repeatedly.

It's hard to meet someone nowadays who isn't familiar with the facepalm phenomenon. Online, it often relates to secondhand embarrassment and self-deprecation and is common in meme culture. Merriam-Webster added the word to its dictionary in 2017, while the Macmillan dictionary introduced it in 2006.
People use it as a verb and a noun, and the gesture itself is thousands of years old. However, according to Merriam-Webster, the written word only started making rounds about 30 years ago. Its first documented appearance was back in 1996 on a Google Groups message board: “Christie facepalmed. ‘Well, her hair was red this morning, right? It's blonde now. You figure it out.’”

In meme culture, the facepalm is strongly associated with a screengrab of the actor Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation. For many, it’s the go-to meme for conveying facepalming and embarrassment. The moment is from season 3, episode 13, but a few episodes later, in episode 16, Picard does a double facepalm, putting both of his hands on his face in exasperation and frustration.
Nowadays, it’s the quintessential image for the facepalm reaction. Another notable reaction image is a scene from Naked Gun: a “group facepalm,” where a crowd makes the gesture. It’s often used for ultimate facepalm moments, when one wants to convey enormous disbelief. On YouTube, the clip is even titled “Epic Facepalm.”

The facepalm gesture itself isn't much of a novelty. An ancient Roman sculpture on Trajan’s column depicted something akin to a facepalm. Among the many figures in the artwork, one man covers his face with his palm, and experts usually interpret his expression as sadness, not frustration or disbelief as we would now, especially in the context of memes.

Similarly, a 1896 statue by Henri Vidal, titled “Cain,” depicts the biblical character Cain after committing the mortal sin against his brother Abel, with his face in his hand. Vidal’s Cain is not facepalming in the contemporary sense, either. His expression is about regret, remorse, and heartbreak.

Interestingly, humans aren’t the only species on Earth that facepalm. English mandrill monkeys do it too. Alas, again — not because they’ve just seen something stupid on the internet. Their facepalms sometimes last as long as 17 minutes, and, as evolutionary biologist Mark Laidre told National Geographic, they do it to avoid social interactions. The mandrills would cover their eyes when they were alone and were more likely to be left alone as long as they kept their eyes covered.

#18 How Can People Break-Up For Such Stupid Reasons!

© Photo: kaushrah
The peak of facepalm memes and reactions was around 2012, at least according to Google Trends search interest. Search interest for “facepalm” has only decreased since then and is now only 6%. Nevertheless, lexicographer Susie Dent has faith in the longevity of “facepalm” as a word and as a phenomenon.
“One of the reasons I think it is so successful – and this is always a key indicator of linguistic survival or success – is that the phrase can move about in different ways and you can put it into different parts of speech,” she told The Guardian back in 2011. “So it is being used as a verb or a noun.”

share read star Landlord Threatens To Sue Tenants For Hurricane Damage, Karma Arrives Like A Strong Gust Of WindSaturday 12 September 2026 - 00:00from Bored Panda
Some tenants can be complete nightmares. But the same holds true for certain landlords. You know the type: cheap, unhelpful, rude and generally difficult to deal with. But as with many things in life, there are levels to just how bad something – or someone – can be. And the following story might actually make you appreciate your own landlord from hell.
A guy has told how he and his partner rented a house in Florida, not realizing just how hectic the hurricanes there can get. When the first one hit, they followed the landlords’ instructions and simply lowered the shutters. Big mistake… But the landlords refused to fix the broken roof.
Fast forward to the second storm, and the tenants soon found themselves in a damp home filled with black mold and cockroaches. Instead of stepping in to help, the landlords threatened to sue them for the damages.
Landlords are legally responsible for fixing structural damage caused by a hurricane

When one elderly couple refused, their tenants took revenge and the entire house was gutted

Getty Images / Unsplash (not the actual photo)
Who is actually responsible for hurricane damage to a house? The experts weigh in…
Florida’s law clearly states that landlords must provide safe and habitable rentals. Additionally, tenants may qualify for reduced rent or lease termination if the unit becomes uninhabitable due to hurricane damage. It’s right there in Florida Statute 83.63, which reads that if “the enjoyment of the premises is substantially impaired, the tenant may terminate rental agreement and immediately vacate the premises.”
The Elliot Legal Group’s experts explain that while Florida law does not require landlords to prevent hurricane damage, landlords must promptly make repairs necessary for the property to be inhabitable.
This doesn’t mean that tenants don’t have hurricane responsibilities in the state. Apart from being responsible for their own belongings during a storm, and following evacuation orders, tenants are also required to notify the landlord of conditions requiring repair.
“After a storm, prompt damage reporting—with photographs when it is safe to take them—helps the owner initiate insurance claims within required notification windows,” notes the Don Asher Management site.
The Florida property management experts add that tenants are also responsible for securing or bringing in all outdoor items ahead of a storm. “Patio furniture, grills, potted plants, toys, and similar items left outdoors during a storm become projectiles,” they warn.
The Don Asher team says there are several common mistakes that landlords make when it comes to hurricanes. One is assuming the tenant will install shutters. “Unless the lease explicitly assigns shutter installation to the tenant—and the tenant has the physical ability and access to do so—this task remains the owner’s responsibility. Do not assume,” they warn.
Another mistake is making lofty promises. For example, promising immediate repair when access may be restricted. “After a major storm, roads may be closed, the property may be in an evacuation zone, and contractors may be unavailable,” the site cautions. “Do not make repair-timeline commitments you cannot keep.”
The property experts say that while a landlord can include reasonable storm-preparation obligations in the lease, they cannot require a tenant to perform tasks that are legally or practically the owner’s obligation, such as maintaining structural systems.
So, go ahead and request that your tenant brings in outdoor furniture, follows evacuation orders, and reports damage promptly. But fix that roof yourself!

Our society’s view on marriage is still a bit complicated. In many people’s eyes, it’s better to stay in a bad relationship than to be single. Similarly, divorce is often seen as a failure: failing at love, at being a good partner, and even at being a productive member of society.
But leaving a bad relationship can sometimes be the best decision a person makes. Research shows that for some women, getting a divorce results in them feeling happier than they ever have in their entire lives. They feel more liberated, even if the divorce negatively affects their financial situation.
Oftentimes, women undergo a physical transformation post-divorce, too. In a recent Threads post, one woman asked divorcees to share their before-and-after photos to see their post-divorce glow-ups. And the results are clear: sometimes, escaping a bad marriage is all a woman needs to be her best self.

In many cases, divorce can be a traumatic experience, but these before-and-afters are clear proof that it doesn’t have to be that way. Research also finds that older women benefit from divorce in terms of better emotional and physical health. Given that the average age of divorce for women is 41.9 years, that might be true for many divorcees in the U.S.
A 2017 study by researchers at the University of Arizona examined the health of women with different marital statuses. They found that divorced women had better health outcomes than their married and single counterparts. They had better diets and reported weight loss after getting divorced. The one area where they were less healthy was smoking: those who were habitual smokers before tended to pick up the habit again after divorce.

There is one area where divorce affects women negatively — finances. After divorce, women’s annual income falls by almost twice as much as their husbands'. Men’s annual household income decreases by about 18% after divorce, and women’s by 33%. What’s more, women are significantly more likely to waive their rights to their partner’s pension during divorce negotiations.
When divorce hits women in midlife, 63% claim they’re worried about their finances, and 57% say they lacked either social, financial, or emotional support during the divorce process. Younger women, however, face a higher risk of poverty and single parenting post-divorce.

Research shows that the strain that women face post-divorce is more chronic, and while men face negative consequences as well, they’re more transient. Still, men face serious consequences to their well-being as well. They report a higher risk of adopting bad habits, feelings of loneliness and social isolation, dissatisfaction with custodial arrangements, and a decline in overall health.

Divorce hits stay-at-home moms even worse. According to a 2021 YouGov survey, 35% of partnered women in the U.S. are either somewhat or entirely financially dependent on their partners. Although the SAHM household model hit a new low in 2025 at only 23%, re-entering the workforce is one of the biggest challenges women face post-divorce, even if they were stay-at-home mothers for only one or two years.

Age discrimination in the job market is real. Unfortunately, for women, it starts about 10 years earlier than for men. In his research, professor of economics at the University of Liverpool Ian Burn found that women are invited to job interviews less often once they hit 40, and for men that doesn’t start happening significantly until they’re around 50.
Burn theorizes that recruiters start discriminating against men when their productivity and skills may be affected by their age. For women, physical appearance plays a big role in when they start experiencing age discrimination.

So, what’s behind the divorce glow-up? Experts say divorce itself doesn’t make women prettier. As licensed marriage and family psychotherapist Annie Wright explained to USA Today, an unhappy marriage causes a person a lot of stress, and we tend to hold stress hormones in the face and the body.
“[It’s] what happens when a woman stops pouring her nervous system into managing someone else's emotional state," Wright claims. "The glow is really energy reclamation, the visible expression of an autonomic nervous system that finally got to rest.”

Trends like “post-divorce glow-ups” also reduce the stigma around the shame of divorce. Ending a relationship doesn’t mean that a couple has failed to make a marriage work. As Seth Meyers, Psy.D., writes for Psychology Today, sometimes sustaining a marriage is not productive in an emotional way.

“In my clinical work, I have found that many divorcing couples have, in fact, tried hard and have also come to honestly see that the relationship has, as a pattern, brought the couple more emotional stress and unhappiness than comfort and security,” Meyers wrote, advocating against shaming divorced couples.
