Less famous than the baby boomers before them and the millennials after them, Generation X, or Gen X, is sometimes referred to as the “forgotten generation,” “slacker generation,” or the “forgotten middle child.” To be clear, they’re the folks born between 1965 and 1980—but if those dates don’t mean much to you, Forbes contributor Angela Woo paints a clearer picture.

She explains that a large number of Gen Xers grew up as latchkey kids—coming home to an empty house because both parents worked, or because their parents had split up. On the tech side, Woo points out that this generation watched ATMs become mainstream, entered the workforce right around the dot-com era, carried around those massive suitcase-sized cell phones, and hit adulthood right as the internet started becoming a normal part of daily life.

Globally, many Gen Xers also lived through major political shifts. They saw the Berlin Wall come down, the Cold War end, communism collapse, and apartheid end in South Africa—all this, Woo explains, “to a backdrop of grunge and disillusionment.”

Nowadays, even though many from this generation are at the height of their careers, with homes and families of their own, Woo notes that they’re still overlooked in mainstream conversation: “We’ve watched the culture interest shift from boomers to millennials like we’re a flyover state.”

Sure, Woo was talking about this in terms of marketing conversation, where she argues Gen Xers have “faded into near obscurity,” but the Pew Research Center also said as much in 2014 when they dubbed Gen X America’s “neglected ‘middle child.’”

Sandwiched between the far larger baby boomer and millennial generations, Pew explained, “Gen Xers are a low-slung, straight-line bridge between two noisy behemoths.”

And that same pattern plays out online too. Because while anyone who’s ever spent some time online has probably seen the phrase “OK boomer” or heard about how “cringy” millennials are, here too, Business Insider’s Andrew Lloyd explains, Gen X has “largely been left to their own devices.”

It’s fitting, really. The same generation raised to fend for itself is now doing exactly that on the internet. They’re carving out corners to revel in jokes inspired by their collective experience—and their particular brand of wry comedy, Lloyd explains, “is quietly thriving online.”

The page delivers exactly what its name promises—entertaining its 119K followers with memes that are frighteningly accurate and just as funny. Through a mix of text-only and text-and-image formats, the page nails what it was actually like growing up in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.

It showcases the kind of humor Lloyd describes when he talks about how Gen Xers “make light of their independent childhoods where they roamed unsupervised, highlight their resilience and sarcasm, and share memories of firm parenting methods.”

As Karen Morgan, a touring comedian and Gen Xer born in 1965, explained to Business Insider, Gen X comedy lands because it’s “keenly observational and nostalgic,” with a tone that’s often sarcastic and self-deprecating. The jokes don’t just romanticize the past or recycle nostalgia. They often acknowledge that growing up as a Gen Xer could be chaotic, confusing, or even unsafe. But they’re told with enough distance and self-awareness to make people laugh instead of wince.

In this sense, while the subject matter of the meme or joke can vary, one theme keeps surfacing: pride in how and when this generation grew up—kids who were, as Morgan puts it, left to fend for themselves at early ages, with “very little supervision and coddling” from their parents. And while Morgan acknowledges that some younger generations might find the idea of this kind of upbringing “alien and unfunny” (to put it mildly), she sees it differently.

Rather, she says, “Our feral childhoods made us strong, independent people with a good sense of humor.”

And maybe that’s the real throughline here. Gen X didn’t get the cultural spotlight boomers and millennials have enjoyed, but they never seemed to mind. My LG 60UM7100PLB started developing a blue tint. At first I only really noticed it when taking photos and the TV was in the background, but once I saw it, I couldn’t unsee it. The TV is built into a media wall with a cutout made specifically for a 60 inch screen. I planned to replace it, only to realise that hardly anyone even makes 60 inch TVs anymore. To make things worse, every repair shop I contacted quoted almost the same price as buying a new TV. After doing some digging, I found out this is a pretty common issue with these models. Apparently the backlight LEDs degrade over time due to substandard components used by the manufacturer, which causes the blue tint. So I decided to have a go at fixing it myself. I ordered replacement backlights from eBay for £30 (about $40) and followed a few YouTube tutorials. All in, it took me about two hours — and it actually worked. Picture is back to normal and I’m absolutely over the moon.

That damage was caused by the ceiling settling,,, this WAS NOT caused by someone hitting it from the other side. My guess is they removed a support structure and the downward pressure pushed your wall out. Get an expert to look at this,,, RIGHT NOW unless a support system is put back in place the issue will get much worse.. even dangerous

Archivist here. Put it under a towel and gently iron it on high heat with steam, moving the iron constantly, until the creases give way. This will probably take 1-2 minutes. Remove the towel. Find something flat (like a book) that’s bigger than the print and lay that flat thing on top of the print for 48 hours.

Roofer Here. Temporary fix for this would be Henrys Roof Cement. You can find it in the roofing section at your home depot. It will be a blue tube with a Yellow head. Safely climb up and put a small dab around each location. Permenant fix would be to pull the affected shingles and use a hammer to smash the tabs down. Replace the few shingles affected. voila

I would very cut out an appropriate section of the drawer to allow it to clear the handle, then glue that section to the cabinet face so it clears when opening and looks more or less closed (use a coping saw) when... closed.

My family’s lakehouse has a copper sink that’s been here for 15 years. My husband wanted to help clean up as we have been staying here for several days. He wasn’t thinking, and used a lime away cleaner. The water here is very hard, and has a lot of lime that builds on the metal here. My husband is freaking out and panicked that he beefed this up beyond repair. The patina on the sink was very dark, as you can see on the sides of the sink. My dad has never cleaned the sink to be shiny like some people have their copper sinks, and he has preferred it to be dark. Can this be fixed?

It will get fixed... Just give it a year or two. Seriously, a sink is meant to be used. The patina is going to ebb and grow and change overtime with use.

#25 To Everyone Who Said It Wasn’t Worth Fixing And I Should Just Buy A New One

You were probably right. Between the wheel, primer, paint, hardware and way too much time and labor, the repairs cost a little over $100. But, I was committed to fixing it and I always like having a little project to work on.

It isn’t perfect but it wasn’t supposed to be. I had originally intended to sand it down to bare metal but after like an hour I said screw that. I knocked back most of the worst rust and then lightly sanded all the other areas for better paint adhesion. The pitting was worse than I thought but not as bad as it looks (probably)

On the tub, 2 coats of clean metal primer (because I bought it when I thought I was going to have clean metal) 2 coats of paint and 1 coat of clear rubberized coating.

For the other parts, I used whatever left over spray paints I had in my shed (hence the different colors)

After all is said and done, I was pretty happy with the outcome and it’s been doing a fine job of wheelbarrowing since

I accidentally put my glass inside the 1L mug not thinking too much of it. Little did I know, the two glasses got stuck to each other. I love these 2 glasses a lot and really want to separate them without having to destroy either one of them. I've tried hot/cold water and dish soap, both to no avail.

Add a few drops of cooking oil around the rim of the wine glass. Swirl it around all the edges. Put stein into warm water while holding base of wine glass. Hold it so the base of the stein is an inch above the bottom of your pan/sink in the water bath. You want the water warm enough to expand the glass of the stein but not so hot as to thermally shock and shatter it.

Hey everyone. I just moved and it seems when I don't open the windows for a couple hours, the rooms starts to smell like foul eggs. I suspect that it might come from the heating pipes (somehow) and id like to seal the hole in the floor off in an airtight, while still being able to remove the seal once I move out. Do you guys have any idea on how to achieve this or what other causes might there be? (I currently live in the Netherlands) Looking forward to your advice :)

You replace it. its a hollow core door. You can get a slab door and remove hardware and use the old door as a template. OR you can get a whole pre-hung door and frame. remove trim and remove old frame. Install, shim and level door frame and replace door trim.

Opened my 15 year old Samsung front loader after a wash cycle and found it full of smoke. Not good, obviously. Any idea what would cause this? Worth trying to fix myself? Worth paying a technician? FIXED IT! (can't edit my original post sorry) Just sharing for anyone who experiences the same issue in future - I "power cycled" the TV, which varies a bit in terms of how the internet says to do it but what I did was: Unplugged the power source while the TV was on Pressed and held down the power button on the TV for ~10 seconds Left the TV unplugged for half an hour or so Plugged it back in and turned on again - all seems fine!

Hello! I’m not entirely sure if I’m in the right sub but I’d like to know if this quote is correct. A relative of mine owns a roofing company and the contractors that he works with are telling him his workers broke a window. They stated that one of his workers dropped a tape measure and as it was falling “the wind blew it” and hit this window on the 18th floor. The building has 20 floors in total. The contractors are now quoting him $14,000 for the window but I’d like to see if the quote is correct before he forks over the money. I only have one photo of the window and I’m unable to get photos myself as I live states away. If more photos are needed I’ll try to get more from him. Thank you.

I’m a commercial glazier and replace windows in high rises often. I can’t tell from the picture but it looks like the window is glazed from the outside. If this is a case you have to setup a swing stage to access it (or use the permanent stage if the building has one). The cost of rigging a swing stage is not cheap. Then it’s the labour and materials. A hurricane rated window is going to be much more expensive than a regular heat strengthened double pane window. This is most likely triple glazed and the outer layer is laminated. Those are not cheap windows to manufacture. Now is the window into regular pressure plate and cap? Or is it a silicone capture style curtain wall? That matters a lot as the process are different and you have to use specialized materials to bond the new window to the frame. This is a two part mixed product that cures almost fully in 10-15mins. Or you use regular structural silicone and have to come back in a few days to remove the clips holding the window in, then seal those holes. I work in a different country so standards are different and I’m not sure about the costs in Florida but you would be surprised with how much a replacement can cost in a tower. Not sure if this helped but here’s some more Information anyway. If you Post more pictures I could get a better ideas on how it’s glazed.

Tiny dab of hot glue on the end of a screwdriver. Once it dries, gently pull out. Like most things it's going to depend on how jammed in there it is, but I think that this is an easy fix. Edit: I see magnets popping up several points in this thread and I had considered that but the reason that I'm suggesting hot glue over the magnets is that as somebody who's done a lot of computer repair I never use magnetized screwdrivers out of fear of ruining a hard drive. I'm not an expert on musical instruments but I'm not trying to get a magnet near the amp if it can potentially mess something up. Now maybe that's just me being overly cautious and maybe there's no actual risk of the magnetism but that is why I recommended the hot glue was out of potential fear of the unknown.

Try using CLR on one of the glasses. If it comes clean it is calcium build up from the hard water. If it doesn't, then it's etching from using too much or the wrong kind of soap. If your dishwasher has "Crystal dry" try running a cycle without it. We have hard water, but we also have a softener. We found out we were using too much detergent (we needed about half as much) and our glasses and pyrex bowls were getting etched. Also read the manual for correct loading techniques.

All these comments telling you to clean are avoiding the real issue here. That's water hammer and that can occur at any pressure. But because your T&P is also leaking I'm inclined to say your PRV has failed. Get a pressure reader from home Depot and test it. It should be in the 55-65 range, give or take. If it's 80+, it's likely the PRV has failed and needs to be replaced. Most plumbing issues are only a symptom of a much bigger issue, so start to eliminate variables. Also, while you're at home Depot, grab some Clorox wipes and clean your damn sink. It's nasty.

Is there ANY way I can fix this? Or at least hide the damage enough to get back my deposit? I was using a charcoal BBQ chimney to heat up some coals, and after it was finished I laid it down on the balcony. I thought it was cement, but the chimney melted into the surface. I'm pretty handy so I'm willing to give anything a try, I just have no idea where to start. I don't even know what this surface actually is. :( Very upset with myself, and panicking a little. I could definitely fix it - at least enough to get the deposit back. I would carefully sand the high ridges until the ring was smooth. Then I would take a two-part epoxy putty (you can buy it at hardware stores) and carefully fill the groove in. While the epoxy is still pliable, use your fingertip and a little bit of rubbing alcohol and smooth it out. Once it cures in an hour or two, carefully sand it smooth. Then I would take some acrylic artist paints and a fine tipped brush, and I would paint the ring to match the table. It would require some experimenting/mixing to get the color perfect, but it could be done.

I was curious so I did a little digging and this is the best response I found on another forum and here's a photo (that isn't nearly as bad): Bad mounting. Metal expands when it gets hot. This means that this ~2 Meter heating strip becomes ~25mm longer per 100 degree rise in temperature. When you have a steel tube fixed in two points and make it longer by heating it, something must give. Either the mounting must allow the expansion or the tube will bend. These steel tubes contain heat conducting ceramic sand an a resistive wire for that carries the heating current. This wire is coiled to allow for bending and expansion. However, when the bending radius is too tight, or a thermal cycling pumping effect moves the sand away, you will get a short circuit. However, since everything expands and contracts by heat the short may not become noticeable until the heater gets to a certain temperature. When designing mounting for heaters like this there may only be one rigid point. All other mounts must allow for sliding or other movement to give room to the expansion. (the clicking noises in your oven) The reason for this element to fail is probably the horizontal mounting bar in the middle. It provided too much rigidity causing the element to buckle.

My daughter decided to draw little body less people on the couch. Pretty sure it's a faux leather of some sort. I have tried rubbing alcohol, shaving cream, and even micellar water. I tried them on other smaller spots and they're just a little lighter. Rubbing alcohol definitely worked the best but it's still very much there.

Heyo, I'm a uni student and I got my bedframe secondhand. A few days ago it finally ended up snapping. Anyone got any ideas for a long-lasting fix? I really like this bed so I'd prefer not to have to replace it, plus I don't have much money lol. I've stabilized it with a few textbooks my friend isn't using in the meantime.

Not sure if that's even called a drain cover, but that metal piece doesn't come off easily. Do I need to use more force? Twist or pull? Will it damage the bathtub if I take it out? It has no visible screws. Google only gave me results for removing a drain "stopper" (none of which looked remotely like mine) so I wasn't sure how to proceed.

#56 My Garlic Press Is Assembled Incorrectly

The 2 parts are assembled incorrectly and one part needs to be rotated for the press to work. To do that, I need to remove the 'screw' thing. I tried unscrewing it with a tiny allen key but it does not work. I (softly) tried to hammer it out but also cannot get I to move. Can I fix this or do I need to buy a new one?

About 10 ceramic floor tiles in my NYC apartment have been gradually loosening and cracking over the past couple years. Is this considered normal wear and tear or an issue with the installation? Landlord wants me to pay for tile replacement, although it doesn’t seem fair considering I have never done anything with the tiles other than walking on them as normal.

How big an area do you have to cover? Depending I'd say buy a large cutting board and mount it over that counter. I'm thinking of an under rim that would keep it from sliding around. The plastic stuff is high density polyethylene (HDPE) and there are industrial sources.

#59 My House Sweats Like Crazy During The Winter And It’s Causing Mold.. Please Help!!

My house is BRAND new, literally finished construction in August of 2024. I live in the Midwest so of course it gets very cold in the winter. Last year, the windows of our house were sweating so badly every time the outside temp was under 30°f that water was pooling up on the windowsills and we called the construction company (we were still under new build warranty) and they told us to always have the house fan running and to turn on our ceiling fans. That worked for a time and the condensation wasn’t as bad after that. It started to warm up shortly after and we didn’t have anymore issue. Flash forward to this past week, it’s been in the negatives here. There is SO much condensation on my windows that mold is starting to grow, our curtains are freezing stuck to the glass in some rooms, and it’s attracting gnats somehow?! I don’t even know where the hell they’re coming from with the weather like this. I’m constantly cleaning and I feel so so so disgusted with all this going on, what can I do to fix it? Please help!

Had the same issue. Insulation was not enough around the window and caused the window and walls tho sweat. Had to rip out the drywall around the window and windowsill and replace with much better and thicker insulation. Have not had an issue since. Yes and trickle helps too

#61 Bathroom Door Is Jammed By Unknown Object On The Other Side

HELP!! I was sitting in my living room and all of the sudden I hear 3-4 huge bangs. It sounded like the house was falling down. I looked everywhere and didn’t see anything until I went in my bedroom and the bathroom door was shut. When I went to open it, the door handle moves like normal but I cannot open the door (it doesn’t budge at all). There’s no other way to get in because the tiny window attached is locked. I went outside to see if I could see what is jamming it but the blinds were closed. I’m thinking that the glass shower door fell off and somehow wedged the door shut. The hinges of the bathroom door are on the inside so I cannot go that route and I tried looking under the door but there’s less than a cm of space. Does anyone have ANY ideas on how I can get this darn door open without busting it down? I appreciate any help in advance.

You don't have to destroy the door in this situation. Use a pry bar to pull off the trim around the door. Cut the caulk / paint with a box knife if necessary first to prevent peeling the wall paint as you pull them off. If you do it carefully you can limit the damage. The frame for most interior doors are shimmed between the frame and the 2x4 wood framing to the sides, which will give you a little bit of room to work with. Use a hacksaw or short bladed sawsall to cut the nails holding the door frame to the 2x4s and remove the shims. Check along the top of the frame for any additional nails holding it in place. At this point the only thing holding the door is the trim on the inside of the frame. With some careful pulling and your pry bar you should be able to pull the whole door frame towards you into the hall. Depending on your flooring height you may have to lift the frame a little as you pull forward. At a minimum you should be able to pull the top into the hall enough to see what happened. Once the mess is cleared up, reverse the process to reinstall the door, being careful to square up the frame before you nail it back in. A little caulk around the trim and you should be good as new.

I used to repair these fiberglass tubs professionally. I couldn't tell you where to get your hands on the proprietary solution WE would spray but it was very similar to a boat gel coat. Lowe's/Home depot have a similar solution in cans though. As to filling the hole, get a piece of card board put a screw in it and get it inside the hole, use a two part filler and fill it in holding the cardboard firmly against the repair, allow it to cure unscrew the screw and fill the smaller hole with more filler, sand smooth and coat with the spray can tub repair stuff from a big box hardware store

Then, using a surgically sharp linoleum knife and a straightedge, cut out the complete square which is damaged. In the space which houses the machine, trim out an identical square, remove it, swap the two, using a clear-drying adhesive and some heavy weights to keep the pieces perfectly flat. Then move the machine into place. Then, start looking for a new place to live; he’ll find it eventually…

Hello, the door knob for my front door fell off and I literally cant get out of my apartment. Is there anything I can do or should I call the firefighters ? The knob isn’t reattaching at all and nothing I try to insert fits Edit : I managed to fix it! My roommate woke up and helped me with opening the door from the inside. The knob disconnected because the outside knob got somehow pushed all the way out, leaving the inside one with nothing to latch onto. I'm not sure what my roommate did but if she hadn't been here, this could've been fixed by having someone from the outside push the knob in. I reattached the door handle again but I'll be in contact with my landlord to get it replaced.

That should slide onto the square rod sticking out of the door. Then you tighten the little screw into the hole on handle so it "grabs" rod. If there's no square rod, it has fallen out the other side. In this case. You will see a square hole. Wedge something into the square hole (flat head screwdriver, spoon handle whatever) now turn so the square hole rotates. Probably left but whatever. Easy peasy

Does the top one still rotate? Could be locked in by some variation in the ridges. Perhaps you need to find the correct angle. Put a tab of tape on each pot to better visualize the relative rotation and start working your way through all 360 degrees.

You can try peroxide. I've had very good luck using it to lighten or remove water spots in sanded/unfinished wood. Even though this floor is finished, the water penetrated the finish, so I expect the peroxide will be able to as well. I would just start with a little bit on a q-tip in a small area and see if it makes a difference and doesn't cause any other damage. As I mentioned, I've only done it on unfinished wood before.

#73 Electricians Left Us Several Of These Holes After Replacing Knob And Tube

As the title states, we hired electricians to replace our knob and tube, and they left us some significant mess. There are some spots where the lathe is cut away. They warned us there would be some holes, but I wasn't expecting this level destruction. Too late now! Is this the kind of thing I can use a mesh patch on, or does anyone have any experience or guidance repairing this?

I’ve fixed holes this size on plaster walls. Put some sort of thin solid backer into the hole. Scrap wood, fiberboard, whatever. Glue or screw it to the lathe. Mix Sheetrock mud with powdered Rock Hard. Slap it in place, let it dry, repeat until built up to level. Feather the edges over the existing plaster. Lightly sand, prime, paint. Takes a few days with dry time but it’s easy. The rock hard reinforces the loosy edges of the plaster and helps the mud set.

#75 Sink Just Gave In While Doing Dishes. Anyone Know How To Fix This?

Hi OP. Plumber here. If you are somewhat handy it’s an easy fix. First, you’re going to need some material. Silicone (I prefer clear when working with stainless sinks) and metal 1/2” steel strapping(the ones with holes in it to screw through) You can find this at your local hardware store. You’ll also need 4 small screws 3/4”-1” screws (you can use longer screws but please keep in mind you have to be careful not to screw all the way or you’ll penetrate into the next cabinet space). Next you’ll need something to hold the sink right in place while you fiddle with the strapping. I usually use a piece of 2x4 to wedge it up to the counter top while I strap the sink in place. To install: clean both surfaces that will be pressed up against the countertop and sink. Clean them well. Apply silicone to the sink surface, apply liberally, this will be to seal the sink from water NOT to hold the sink. Lift the sink into place carefully lining it up to where you want it. Once you have it pressed in place quickly wedge it with the 2x4 vertically. Make sure it’s held in place well. Next install 2 straps across the underneath of the sink with metal strapping, ensuring that they are very tight. This is what’s holding your sink. Clean the silicone from the countertop/sink. Helps if you wet your finger a bit. Reconnect drain line (it’s most likely busted from the sink falling on it)

That is 1970's style paneling that someone painted over. Determine thickness. Buy a sheet of paneling. Find the seam to the left. Remove the whole sheet top to bottom. You might need to lift some trim to get out from under the baseboard and door trim. Cut and nail up new paneling as a rectangle. Paint. Restore trim.

According to a United Nations Report, approximately 1.05 billion tonnes of food waste were generated in 2022, including inedible parts. That's roughly 132 kilograms per person and almost one-fifth of all the food available to consumers. What makes the figures especially surprising is where most of the waste happens. Around 60% of food waste takes place at the household level, while food services account for 28% and retailers for 12%. So while supermarkets and restaurants certainly play a role, a huge portion of the problem begins in our own kitchens.

Breaking those numbers down makes the scale even more difficult to comprehend. Households generated approximately 631 million tonnes of food waste in 2022. Food services contributed another 290 million tonnes, while retail accounted for around 131 million tonnes. On average, each person wastes approximately 79 kilograms of food every year. That is equivalent to at least 1 billion meals being wasted every single day. One forgotten lunch may not seem like a global crisis, but when similar moments happen in homes across the world day after day, the numbers quickly become staggering.

We’ve heard about relationship pranks that go a step too far. But what happens when a partner intentionally lies, and then expects you to laugh it off as a joke?

That’s the nightmare scenario one 21-year-old woman recently found herself in. After a night out, her boyfriend’s mother sent a harrowing text saying he didn’t survive a car crash. She instantly went into panic mode.

Sharing her story online, she said she went into shock and did something extreme. But moments later, her boyfriend walked through the door completely fine.

When the truth finally came out, he offered no apologies and started blaming his girlfriend for being too emotional.

As one person in the comments noted: “You couldn’t hold a candle to this guy in the drama stakes.”

Emotional manipulation tactics that severely harm the victim

In this story, the author’s boyfriend made her believe that he had passed away in a severe car crash. When she reacted emotionally and eventually got angry that he had lied, he told her she was “ruining the joke” and trying to “guilt” him.

To deflect accountability, he turned the tables completely, labeling her natural trauma response as “manipulative.”

These phrases are a common manipulation tactic that mental health professionals call DARVO. Coined by psychologist Dr. Jennifer Freyd in the 1990s, DARVO is a documented approach where those confronted with wrongdoing instantly Deny the act, Attack the accuser, and Reverse the roles of Victim and Offender.

It combines elements of gaslighting and blame-shifting.

Some experts also believe these are traits of narcissism. “By denying their actions, attacking the person confronting them, and flipping the roles of victim and offender, the narcissist effectively redirects attention away from their own actions, often causing doubt in the victim’s claims,” says Bayu Prihandito, founder of Life Architekture and certified psychology expert.

He adds: “The psychology behind DARVO is rooted in a strong need for self-preservation and control. They will often employ this strategy to protect their ego and maintain their desired self-image at all costs.”

When this form of manipulation takes hold, victims often end up internalizing a twisted narrative. They start to believe they are the villain of their own story and convince themselves that they somehow caused or deserved the mistreatment.

Enduring this constant cycle of blame-shifting takes a devastating toll on mental health.

Over time, it erodes a person’s self-worth and reality, triggering deep anxiety, depression, and relentless self-doubt. Trapped in a state of helplessness, victims can lose trust in their own judgment — and eventually, lose touch with their true sense of self.

“The victim develops a pseudo personality that echoes and repeats the narcissist’s false self — their grandiose narrative of themselves,” says Avigail Lev, PsyD, founder of Bay Area CBT Center and CBTonline.

It’s cruel, to say the least, to blame a victim for a physiological trauma response

Studies show that severe emotional shock (such as sudden, unexpected grief) activates the brain’s fight-or-flight response. It can cause temporary cognitive collapse and trigger old behaviors even after years of recovery.

“Relapse doesn’t mean failure, it signals that emotional needs are not being met… Warning signs can emerge suddenly or gradually, triggered by stress, trauma, conflict, or worsening mental health conditions like depression or anxiety,” says Viviane Silva, a clinical social worker and psychotherapist.

Expecting someone to maintain perfect emotional composure while processing traumatic grief isn’t just unrealistic — it’s medically unfounded.

Yet, rather than offering support during a mental health crisis he directly caused, the author’s partner attempted to minimize his actions by hiding behind a classic shield: framing the entire ordeal as a “harmless prank.”

Ask any expert or sane person, and they will tell you that a prank requires mutual enjoyment.

It crosses an unforgivable line the moment it targets someone’s physical body, creates actual danger, or destroys property. At its core, a genuine prank is completely harmless. A healthy joke should be lighthearted, leaving the person who was tricked feeling amused rather than terrified, humiliated, or distressed.

For anyone navigating this level of emotional distress, experts emphasize that the first step toward recovery is breaking the cycle of isolation and self-doubt.

Victims should trust their instincts and document what occurred. Re-establishing firm personal boundaries is critical. Reaching out to trauma-informed therapists or trusted support networks also provides a safe space to process the shock.

And when a partner repeatedly dismisses trauma responses, walking away is often the healthiest choice.

Not with a partner but just in general:
In Ireland it’s customary to say no to anything offered to be polite. Even if you really want it. Eg:
“Will you have a cup of tea?”
“No, thanks”
“Ah go on”
“No, I’m fine”
“Go on”
“Ok, if it’s not too much trouble.”

Turns out in America if you say no they just say “ok” and you never get your tea. Crazy Americans how dare they not be able to read my mind!

I had been dating a Dutch guy for almost a year. One day I wanted to buy a bottle of water but had no spare change with me so I asked him to borrow some. The bottle costed approximately 1.2 euros. Somehow the following week I had completely forgotten to give his money back. I’m Brazilian and my husband is Scottish. His sense of humour is amazing. So quick and dry! But there’s no PDA at all! In Brazil is very common for couples to kiss passionately in public and are even expected to do so. I felt so rejected for a long time because he would only show me affection when we were together in a room! Scottish people love to “roast” people and you should expect to be mocked constantly and not show any resentment!! Brazilians are very agreeable but very proud and sensitive, so it’s been rather difficult to adapt hahaha
I’m now living in Scotland and apparently the way people make friends here is by binge drinking, pub crawling (and getting kicked out) together. Eventually you’re just pals?
In Brazil people would make conversation, ask everything about you, then maybe ask you for a coffee or some light drinking at first. I feel it’s really difficult to make friends here if you’re not into drinking until you pass out.

Dating a Japanese guy felt like being in a long distance relationship even if you live together. The long working hours, lack of physical affection, privacy, etc. makes it hard to figure out if your partner even likes you as a person. My ex was US born and raised but his mom was from Thailand and still had family there.

We went on a 2 week vacation there and stayed with his aunt and uncle. We visited with lots of family members while there and they would all aggressively insist on paying for us but I guess secretly they were all annoyed that we let them pay for things.

We spent a lot of time with his cousin and wife who were close in our age and they would pay for EVERYTHING. Like we were at a mall and I was browsing in a store and went to check out and when his cousin saw me with money in my hand he straight up RAN across the mall with his wallet in his hand to stop me from paying. We just thought they were being generous and good hosts but my ex’s mom called us from the US a few days later and told us her sister was complaining that her son had no more money and couldn’t afford to take us out all the time and we needed to give them money and pay for things.

After we left I heard some other family members had similar things to say about us letting them pay for us and being rude and stuff and not leaving money for his aunt and uncle who hosted us. It actually hurt my feelings really badly because I thought they were being genuine when they offered to pay and didn’t realize there was an expectation that we were supposed to gift them with money after.

My ex is Greek, very passionate about food.
Me/ not so much. Not at all. Food to me is just that, food to keep me going and healthy. I appreciate people who are really into it and delight in preparing it.

He would always try and get me to eat more than I wanted to and it annoyed me to no end. I stop eating when I’m full or I’ll just graze eat through out my day. I actually had to get really firm and sometimes snappy with him about it because he was a over bearing. We eventually got on the same page. But goodness.

I’m American and my husband is Chinese. The biggest culture shock is when we went to a Chinese New Years party with other Chinese nationals living in the US and the hosts handed us red bags when we came in. I didn’t know what this was but said thanks! and moved on. Later in the night I opened these red bags, expecting a card or nice note, but they were giving out HUNDREDS of dollars! My husband was unmoved because he said this is always what they do when celebrating the new year or other big events. I’ve come to learn that money and gifts are a show of respect to the Chinese way more than they are in America. I can go to my aunts house and not bring her a gift, but if we don’t bring a gift to his aunts she says we are disrespectful.

I’m from the US and married a Venezuelan and I always knew they are more family oriented then me but my god her family will just show up at our house randomly. They all live separately but will gather together and just show up. No text or calls even to my wife. Also they just walk in no knocking or anything, if the door is locked and they have to knock they think it’s rude. I don’t know why they can’t be away from each other for more the. A couple days.

My partner is from Argentina and I'm from Guatemala. We both are native Spanish speakers and yet we have completely different words for the same thing.
Example: pineapple in Guatemala is called "piña" and in Argentina is "ananá". "Piña" in Argentina means punching so imagine his shock when I first asked him if he liked "piñas"?

My ex is Albanian and I he had an attitude like "I am the man, I will take care of you" which I wasn't used to. I went on holiday to Greece and he sent me about 200 Euros to buy him some cigarettes and said to keep the rest, which was around 80 Euros. He was ultra masculine and had an attitude of I was to be taken care of, but almost in a controlling way. He was always sweet and soft when it was just us, but anytime we were out in public, like at a coffee shop, it felt like he was putting on an act to prove himself. I left him when I realised that although he was good to me, his mother would never let him marry a non Albanian and he'd choose his mother over me lol.

Not really culture as much as it is class for me, but my SO is from a fairly middle class family, i come from the benefit background. The biggest shock for me was literally how my entire way of life is so far from what most people consider normal.. I thought it was normal for everyone to shout at eachother but it turns out all my family are crazy mentally ill and refuse to get help because "they shouldn't have to change who they are" even though they watched me change into a better person through medication and therapy and it just baffles me how people can just chose not to better themselves and the lives around them? My SOs family are the kindest people I have ever met, they have clean homes, cars, jobs... all the things that I hope to achieve one day.

From the UK, my partner is from southern US. Took him to England last year, he liked it a lot. Didn’t really understand some manners and customs, or why there are dogs at the pub, milk in the tea or why we were going for an after dinner walk in the rain. He also raised an eyebrow at my 19 yo niece drinking and smoking. My family is super lefty liberal and his is the exact opposite, my family adores him but he has been hesitant to have me meet some of his family. We will see how it goes!

Asian here dating a North American. He doesn't understand why I'm so close to my family. It's especially hard because our family immigrated to NA, which brought us even closer together. I love spending time with my family, and he likes them, but doesn't see himself visiting family often. In the future if we're still together, I would love to be able to have a meal with them at least once a week, or even just once a month. He's content going a few weeks without contacting family at all, not even his own. Never understood it, his parents are great and have grown to be better than they were during his childhood. We're learning more about each other every day, that's for sure lol.

I'm Ukrainian and my bf is Filipino. Biggest difference is the family size. My family is tiny tiny, just me and my mum. We don't have any family in Canada, and I'm not close/have contact with the people back home. His immediate family has about literal dozens when it comes to cousins, aunts, uncles etc.

It's incredibly overwhelming to have so many people in your face when it comes to holidays. I had to break out of my shell more, but him and his family had to accept that I need to get out and walk around for a bit to cool off.

My husband's family are Polish and Catholic (I'm English and Protestant) so they celebrate Christmas more on Christmas Eve than Christmas Day. Also, the Christmas dinner I went to had EIGHT courses! Apparently, that was a cut-down version and they normally have TWELVE! My parents normally feed the 5000 on Christmas but even so, they only do two courses.

Apart from that, he won't drink or eat meat on certain days which doesn't bother me because I don't drink and I've been trying to reduce my meat intake anyway.

The only thing I've found challenging is more due to regional differences than cultural. My husband grew up in Yorkshire and there are some words that are completely normal and acceptable to say there but are very offensive anywhere else in the country so I had to tell him not to say those words anymore.

My partner is Indian - if he cooks and offers me food he gets really upset and keep asking until I say yes. Apparently it’s rude to turn down offered food in India.

When I’ve visited and stayed with his parents I’ve always said yes, it’s only an issue when I’m not hungry or he’s made something really Indian that I’m not a fan off and rather waste my calories on something else.

I lived in Peru for a while and stayed in a hostel for the first few days after arriving. The owner of the hostel was super helpful and, despite also owning a guide business, didn’t try to sell me anything. We hung out and he introduced me to some local rock climbers and told me about an upcoming climbing competition. I ended up becoming part of a community of amazing climbers and guides, finding roommates, and a romantic partner.

Months later, I found out that my partner’s brother worked with the hostel owner at his guide business. It dawned on me that the guy probably had no idea I had settled in the city, partly thanks to his help. We were going to the guide business to meet the brother and I thought I might see the company owner. I’d just baked some cookies, so I brought some as a gift to say thanks for all his kindness.

It did NOT go over well. The whole workplace fell silent. The awkwardness was palpable. My partner was furious with me.

I guess in Peru you DO NOT bake for someone else’s man. Lesson learned.

Don't know if this works because I'm not in it anymore. My first real adult relationship was with a Muslim man. His family was very religious, he was a practicing muslim for the most part. He grew up in Germany in a very conservative household and I grew up in California, my family is Hindu and liberal, so we had a TON of cultural differences. He was funny, brilliant and so incredibly cool and confident. I think he was really torn between wanting to be progressive and open but still afraid of disappointing his family, disobeying his religion and had trouble breaking away from his societal norms.

Dealing with someone who was stuck in between wasn't easy and I had made many sacrifices to make our relationship work. When we met he told me he loved everything about how free, opinionated and outgoing I was. A few weeks in he told me that he liked the way I dressed but that it wasn't appropriate for me to wearing certain things in public when I was with him, so I started to dress more conservatively when we were out together. A few months in he said he was always worried that something bad would happen when I'd go out and drink with my friends and that drinking was wrong, so I stopped drinking. He told me he loved how outgoing I was but didn't think it was okay to go out to a bar/club alone with my close male friends because thats when bad things happen, so I stopped doing that. I think everything finally came to a head when I called him out on all the things he did that didn't fall under being a good muslim like smoking w**d and having s*x.

He said something along the lines of he wanted to be with someone like me in theory and loved me but when he was in it, he felt like it was wrong and he was worried about my salvation, which sucked to hear. I think the socio-cultural and religious differences proved to be too much for us.

Anyways, I do think intercultural relationships can work, as long as both parties and readily compromising. Which wasn't the case in my relationship.

My partner is also Dutch, she's from the south and her family speaks Limburgish at home, though they also speak regular Dutch and most speak German due to the border proximity.

Honestly, the biggest shock was realizing how different Canadians were. We kinda get painted with the "polite American" banner, which is generally accurate, but little differences my SO would point out were very interesting. The other biggest has been trying to learn Dutch/Limburgish, having a really tough time of it, but her Oma from a small village in Limburg really appreciates it and even laughed at a butchered joke I made there. I was really worried they'd get annoyed or make fun of my broken Dutch, but they were actually just really happy I made an effort to try. Its a hard language to learn with only English I find.

The biggest thing with her is how polite and sincere a lot of random Canadians are in public. Almost everyone thanks bus drivers or Uber drivers or service staff, which her whole family found weird for their first years here as in there mind "you're thanking them for doing what they're paid for. What?". When I said Dankjewel to the Tram Driver in Amsterdam, they were surprised and I believe made a comment to my SO joking in Dutch.

There was also a big difference in "class" stuff I guess you could say. In NL, she claims they are very formal with the way they address teachers, parents, authority figures basically. In Canada, we are almost always on equal footing besides using little things like "Mr/ms" and "sir". She found the casual way I'd make jokes at my parents very jarring at first.

The biggest shock for her was probably our slang and language at first coming to Canada. She learned most of her English from TV and books, but those don't match how Canadian teenagers speak whatsoever, it's like 60% slang.

Her biggest shock from dating a Canadian probably comes from the fact that I'm a Newfoundlanders from a big Newfoundlanders family on both sides. Our culture is quite a bit different from hers, and is extremely inclusive most of the time (Come from away, for an extreme example. My town is an hour away from Gander). My mother immediately was hugging her, showing her around, making jokes about us together, and she said "love you both" as we left. We'd been dating for quite a bit here, but this was still hugely different to how her parents act. For reference, I think my mom hugged her then and her own mom hadn't in over a decade. She also said vocalizations of their love were strange, but my mum and dad were big about saying I love you before going to bed or getting off the phone.

It really has been interesting and I love NL and NL food!

EDIT: The Cheek Kissing gets me so awkward too! How are you more reserved than us but kissing everyone?! I swear I turn into a tomato whenever it happens.

I dated a Bolivian guy for a few months as a USA born person. Biggest shock was how they displayed affection. He wanted constant kissing and physical contact, and also expected me to buy gifts and celebrate each month anniversary. As someone who dislikes PDA and over the top displays of affection it was rough for me, and I felt like I never satisfied his desires in the relationship.

My husband is Mexican and his family does everything extremely spontaneously. My family plans vacations months in advance, even dinner at each others’ houses is at least a week ahead of time. I’m Asian American and my boyfriend is not. I show my love through actions and I’d get upset if my needs or wants weren’t anticipated. Asians tend to be very good hosts and are always offering food, water, etc. After meeting his family, I understand that these things need to be vocalized. My communication has improved a lot and to his credit, he’s gotten better at being proactive in our relationship.

Am British. The traditional mating dance of my people is - find someone you like and mock them mercilessly and relentlessly until one of you passes. Sincerity is reserved for weddings, funerals and the birth of children, and even then you have to make fun of the baby.

My boyfriend and his mom are Chinese. When we visited his mother, she got a lot of food for us. I normally don't eat too much. So after I had my dinner, she was shocked I wouldn't eat anymore.

I got another plate and stuffed myself in order to not be rude 😔. Ever since then, I've been eating more so I can prepare myself to eat at future family dinners.

My partner is French and I’m german.

We compromised on having dinner around 7PM rather than 8:30 or later for him and 6 for me. Also Germans eat cold at dinner and to him it was so odd, somwe agreed to only do it half the evenings.

I accepted to be less direct with him in feedback because he just sometimes could not handle my directness. In turn he tried to be more direct and not add fluff because I sometimes will not get what he means if he adds too much indirectness.

I introduced him to German beds: two separate 90cm mattresses in a single 1.8m bed and both get their own covers. He thought it was super unromantic at first but now he wonders how he ever lived with one sheet in a tiny 1.40m bed with his previous girlfriend. If both are well rested both are happier!!

I had to learn how to spend hours and hours on a table for a big holiday dinner. In Germany we put everything on the table for dinner then we eat then we are done. In France every course is eaten and then they start cooking the next one and it’ll probably be 30min. On occasions like Christmas this can take FOREVER. And I kinda hate it. I just want to be done eating and do something else. I’ve had to accept that habit and just get up During courses for a little walk to not get too bored or antsy

I'm a white Christian American woman and my boyfriend is an Arab Muslim Saudi man! I guess I've gotten used to eating a lot less pork (I still eat some haha) and I also like partaking in a later dinner sometimes.

I guess a belief for me that has changed was that it opened my eyes a lot to Arab people and Muslim people in general even though I already had Muslim friends.

Oh yeah, and in Arabic you don't pronounce Islam like "IZ-lam" you pronounce it like "Issss-lam" (like a snake S.)

When I was living in Austria, my Slovenian ex boyfriend used to absolutely cringe at the way I wash dishes and vice versa.

I'm British and I can't speak for all Brits but we do have a tendency to fill up the sink (or a bowl within the sink) with water and washing up liquid, wash everything in there, leave it to dry and then tip the dirty water out. Rinsing is optional (I am not a rinser)

He honestly used to gag at this.

I, on the other hand, was so bemused as he basically used a year's supply of water and dish soap while washing a few plate under a constantly running steam.
(Side note: he also tipped thinks like leftover soup down the toilet - is that a thing?)

I'll be honest though - everyone I met from the continent was absolutely outraged at the 'British method'. One French girl refused to eat off my plates.

To this day, I don't know what's right or wrong but I absolutely love the controversy 😂.

We are from neighbouring European countries, me UK and him France, so there's very little difference but I can think of a few straight off. France has a weird tradition of wishing each other a happy saint's day, they literally have all the saints' names on every calendar and expect a cake or at least a phone call "bonne fête Marie/Eric/etc !".

A well known one in France is spending 3-4 hours at the dinner table, we snack lunch in the UK, we might even eat while on the go.

Yet again in France, it's the custom to greet people by kissing them on the cheek, some people do sloppy smackers (ugh I just tap my cheek on theirs) but if you kiss your darling children on the mouth everyone looks at you like you're a pedophile. And the French have a nasty habit of joking about small children being in love if a girl plays with a boy, "I'm not leaving those two alone ha ha ha" which I think is gross, how can anyone sexualise babies and toddlers? It's like the 70s or something.

My gyno told me if you have PCOS or something that causes less periods, you absolutely need to get checked for uterine cancer/be aware of the signs. If our uterus doesn’t shed like it should, we’re more likely to get uterine cancer. I’m 33 and was just told this last year after almost 15 years of extremely sparse periods (I’m all good though thank goodness)

Herpes isn’t automatically tested for even if you say “I want a full panel” because 1. It’s so common and 2. You can’t get a positive swab unless you’re having an outbreak. Ask for a blood test, it will show positive if you’re positive and have had at least one outbreak or negative if you don’t have it.

So my great-aunt passed away and left me a decent inheritance. Nothing wild, but enough to pay off my student loans and set aside a little savings. I told my friend , we’ll call her Rachel, over lunch.

She got quiet. Then she said, “Wow. Must be nice. I bet you’ll help out your friends who weren’t so lucky growing up.”

I laughed and said something like, “I mean, I’ll probably treat my friends to dinner more often.”

She stared at me and said very serious:

“No, like, actually help. We’ve known each other forever. I think it’d be fair if you split it.”

We were out and about one day when she said something about possibly coming over to sit in the hot tub one evening. Which I have no problem with my friends coming over, as long as I'm home and they ask ahead of time.

So I told her that's fine, just let me know.

Well it turns out she had told other people, none of whom I had ever met, that I would be okay with them coming over too.

I let her know that I definitely wasn't okay with that, and that she had no business inviting people I don't know to my house. I think she tried to say something after that, but I just told her that I wasn't going to let random people into my house.

She seemed a bit taken aback that I wasn't on board with all of that. But seriously? What was she expecting?

#3 Friend Wanted Me To Cancel My Kid’s Party To Attend Her Kid’s Party

So me and my two friends (all 33f) have been a trio since middle school. Ironically, all three of our oldest children have the same exact birthday but different years. Me and Tonya have boys aged 8 and 10. Lauren has a 2 year old daughter.

A few months ago, Tonya and I decided to plan a bowling/laser tag birthday party for our boys. We told Lauren about the party and invited her. She said she would try to make it. Cool. The party was on a weekend, not the day of their actual birthday.

A few days before the party, Lauren FaceTimed Tonya and I to invite us to her daughter’s birthday party. It was for the same day as our boy’s party. No big deal. It’s the weekend after their birthdays so we knew the parties would eventually clash. We told her we wouldn’t be able to make it and we thought that was that.

The day after the party, Tonya and I FaceTimed Lauren to ask how her daughter’s party went. We saw pictures online and thought the decorations came out beautifully. We were all ears just waiting on the details of baby girl’s 2nd birthday. Instead, we were met with anger. Lauren starts asking why we didn’t show up. Ummm we were at our boy’s party and she knew this. She then tells us we were supposed to cancel their party and come to her daughter’s. When I asked her why she would think we would even consider doing that she said a 2nd birthday party was more important than 8 and 10 and we should have just picked a different day.

I’m not one to argue so I tell Lauren she’s tripping and hang up the video call. The next day I noticed she logged me out and changed the password to a streaming account we shared. Is it that serious? I guess to her it was. I haven’t talked to Lauren since.

Verywell Mind defines entitlement as a personality trait where someone is convinced that they are owed special treatment or recognition despite not having earned either. Entitled people often believe that the world owes them something, but they do not put in any effort in return.

That imbalance, of taking without giving back, is what makes entitlement so corrosive in a friendship specifically. In most healthy relationships, there is an unspoken understanding that both parties will show up for each other. Sometimes you show up for me, and sometimes I show up for you. The help is reciprocal, and it’s given freely and without expectation. So there’s no need to keep score—there’s simply trust that it’ll even out eventually.

I’m a bartender, a girl I’m friends with just turned 30. She invited me out but i was working and then she’s like we might swing by lol and I say cool! I’ll give you a free birthday drink maybe a few. I’m thinking she took that as i was doing that for her and her alone maybe some of her girls, depending on the group size.

She shows up with a group of like 20 people and then expects me to hook them allll up and give them a table that needs to be reserved in advance. I was like girl what i can’t do that and she says “it’s not like I’m asking you to pay” whaaaa? Then who’s paying? My boss? You think that would go over well?

These folks were drankinnnnn too, I’m talking a tab of like $3000 ish all together. And she thought It would be free because we are friendly.

Also i made $75 in tips from the whole group.

#5 Oh, My Rich Friends. We Can't Be Friends Anymore..

So, tonight, an acquaintance I haven't spoken to in at least 5 years calls me. "Marcus", I'll call him. Marcus did make a little chit chat, then they ask me what I'm doing for work. I say I am between full time stuff right now, but looking.

They agree that the job market is hard, and how they are divesting themselves of a business that they've had for decades as 'the suckers aren't buying anything anymore.' I give a little laugh, because that's a weird way to refer to clients, but maybe Marcus is a little down.

They then mention about their home in New England, and their home in the west coast in a 'highly desirable area on the beach' that they want to split the entire summer between the two locations because it's so hot in the south in the summer. I say something along the lines of "That's a heck of a problem to have" and we laugh again. That's when they drop their entitled request on me. The want someone to care for their extremely obese, nearly bed bound elderly auntie that lives with them. 7 days a week, no days off, for 3 months.

The best part? This home is not air conditioned. They want to offer a fellow human $200.00 per week since it's 'light duty', but, they say I'd have my own room. (I own a home, so that isn't of interest to me.)

I explained that I was going to have to pass on this amazing offer, and Marcus got really insulted. He whined and said they didn't know anyone as nice as me, and since I was a flight attendant before this, I know "the first aid and serving food stuff". Again, I declined and he was confused. I said " Would you work for $200.00 a week? Because I won't." He said he would call in a week to see if I changed my mind. Blocked him as soon as the call ended.

And this isn’t an accident or just a misunderstanding. It’s more than that. Because entitled friends think they are inherently owed something, they don’t believe this standard should apply to them at all. So they’re the type of friends who expect you to drop everything when they need you but don’t offer you the same favor when the tables turn. And when you go out of your way to help them, they also show you no gratitude.

This isn’t because they didn’t notice the effort you put into doing so. It’s because, whether they realize it or not, they didn’t believe they needed to. To them, your help wasn’t a gift—it was simply what was due to them. That’s also why they can react with frustration or even anger when they’re told “no.” Since they genuinely believe they’re owed something from you, setting a perfectly reasonable boundary can lead to them feeling like you’ve wronged them.

#6 Letting Old Friends Crash At Your House - Never Again!

A friend I've known since 1995 or so was in town and asked if he and his wife could stay with me from Sunday thru Thursday morning. I agreed because I know them, we get along, and my two children like them. From the beginning, it was very uncomfortable; the friend(Don, to make it easier) kept making s*xual innuendos in front of my kids and his wife(Clara). Example: saying he thought he'd be sleeping in my bed. Absolutely not, and I told him more than once I didn't like him speaking like that in front of my children. Yesterday, clara went out with a friend of theirs(Alex). I work remotely and don just slept all day. When he finally got up, he asked me if Alex could spend the night at my house too! I have never met this man before and was shocked he would ask that. I immediately said no. I was thinking of my kids, who are 6m and 3f. Hell no would a stranger be allowed to spend the night! I guess they expected that I would say yes, because they began pushing, saying they know Alex and he isn't a creep or one of 'those' people, how he just needs to get away from his extremely crowded home, etc. I still said no. Don tried saying I know him and he'd never bring anyone dangerous around my kids. At that point I was ready to ask them to cut their visit short, since they couldn't respect my very solid no. Shortly after this, Don said they had decided to get a hotel for the rest of their visit. I was relieved and they left last night. Lesson- even old friends can be jerks about respecting boundaries. I've decided to cut them both off after this and feel happier for it.

A family friend called me out of the blue, all sweet at first, asking how I was. Then she casually drops, So I need your car for about a week. I have this really important trip and I figured since you barely drive yours anyway, it would not be a big deal.

I told her very politely that I do not lend my car to anyone. She instantly flipped telling me I was being selfish and not thinking about how important this is for her.

For the record my barely driven car is how I get to work, run errands, and live my life. And this very important trip? A beach vacation with her boyfriend.

#8 My Friend Slept With My Crush And Then Got Mad That I Still Liked Him

EDIT: We are NOT friends anymore, haven’t been for at least a year. I called her my friend because that’s what she was at the time. I did eventually grow a spine lol

We met him at the same time and she kept calling him gross and ugly. I thought he was cute but I was too shy to do anything. We all hung out a few times and literally the same night I started flirting with him she suddenly didn’t think he was gross anymore.

He asked her about me and told her that he thought I was cute. She told him to not even bother with me cause I thought he was ugly. No I didn’t???

And that’s the rub that makes the actions of an entitled friend sting in a way no rude stranger ever could. There’s a big difference between a stranger who cuts you off in line and a friend who treats a boundary as an affront and your time, energy, and loyalty as something they’re entitled to.

The stranger doesn’t know you and doesn’t owe you much more than human decency—they may have failed to notice you, but there’s no real betrayal in it. A “friend,” on the other hand, may have noticed exactly how much you give and decided that was simply the baseline.

#9 Friend Wants Me To Make Her A Wedding Dress For The Cost Of Materials

So I have a Degree in Fashion which some people think means I can be their personal seamstress, i'm used to this problem and I don't mind helping people out but I never work for free.

My pregnant friend recently reached out to me and asked me if I could make her, her wedding dress and sent me pictures of the idea she had in mind, it isn't exactly a simple dress but also not the most complex i've ever done either, I told her I could for sure do that for her and it'd cost £600, she was shocked at this and told me she thought i'd do it for free and she'd just pay for materials, I pointed out how many hours this would take me to do and all the hand embroidery needed, then I explained I was doing this for a quarter of the price i'd charge other people because she's my friend.

At this point she started to get very upset telling me I have no idea how much stress she's under with the wedding and the fact she's pregnant and how money is tight and how this should be my wedding gift to her and how great it'd look in my portfolio, I don't think i'm being unreasonable to want some money for this...but other friends are telling me it's horrible how i'm wanting to charge her for this and it's not like i'm a high end bridal shop

#10 My Friend Is Mad Because A Random Guy Didn't 'Serve' Her

Few days ago I went to a dinner party with my friend. It's a Chinese restaurant with big round tables. We sat around a table with about 10 people, she found one guy there attractive (it's a friend's friend, so they didn't know each other), she wanted his attention.

The guy was chatting with his friend, my friend waved and stopped their conversation, asked him to get some extra tableware for her. The guy called a waitress, said 'Please get some tableware for that lady'. Then he told my friend 'I ordered the waitress to bring it for you.' After that, he continued chatting with his friend.

Then my friend started her endless complaint, he said the guy was ridiculously impolite. I asked her why?? She said the guy was too rude to not serving her, he did not go to get the tableware for her, but only sitting there and ordered the waitress. #11 Refusing To Pay More After Already Spending $200 To Clean My Friend’s Sofa

A good friend of mine invited me to her birthday party, and kids were also coming. My daughter wore a red dress, and she sat with the other kids on a white sofa to watch a movie. The next day, I received a message from my friend stating that my daughter's dress had left a reddish mark on it, and she wanted me to fix it. I hired a sofa cleaner and paid $200 for the service, but my friend was still not happy with the results, and she could still see a pinkish tone somewhere. Now she wants to contact the manufacturer and obtain a solution for the issue, and if it's not under warranty, she wants me to cover the cost. I told her that if she was inviting people and kids to her party, she should protect her furniture. She disagreed by saying that her kids never make a mess.

Next month I (F) am going away on vacation with a long time friend (F). We are going to the Caribbean for five nights. It is not all inclusive so we will be responsible for paying for food, drinks and any activities.

She asked me how much was I bringing in cash, I said $300 cash plus debit and credit cards. She told me she is going to bring $300 cash but no debit or credit cards. She said she is on a budget and $300 is her limit. I explained that comes around to only $60 per day, this is not one of the cheaper Caribbean islands so food and drink alone won’t leave her with much left over. I reminded her that she needs to factor in cabs, incidentals or any activities we may decide to do. And you never know if an emergency will come up where she will need money. She says to me “that is why I have you” and started to laugh.

That pissed me off to no end. I tell her that we are both adults who are responsible for our own selves. It would be one thing if she lost her purse and needed money, I would float her money before she even had time to ask. But to purposely use me as her back up ATM is not going to work. I told her now that I know what she is up to, I’m not going to go along with it. If she runs out of money, she will just be out and hungry. She needs to bring her cards with her for her own good.

She is now telling me I am too harsh and she will bring extra money but no cards. I told her to do what she wants but if there is an emergency she is on her own.

I covered the Airbnb, gas, groceries, and even two dinners out — all because everyone said “we’ll pay you back when we get home.” Not a single one of them has paid me back. #14 Coworker Told Hr I Was Being Exclusive… For Not Inviting Her To My Wedding

This was honestly one of the weirdest work things I’ve ever dealt with.

There’s a woman in my office I’m friendly with, but not close to. We’ve had small talk here and there, nothing deep. No lunches together. No real outside-of-work connection.

She found out I was getting married and asked when the wedding was. Then she straight up asked if she was invited.

I kinda laughed and said, “Oh no, it’s really small. Just close friends and family.” I didn’t think anything of it.

She got quiet and a little cold after that, but I figured okay, maybe awkward moment, whatever.

Fast forward a few days later, I get a meeting invite from HR.

Turns out she filed a complaint saying I was being “exclusive” and “creating a hostile environment by leaving people out.”

Because I didn’t invite her. To my wedding. That I’m paying for. That isn’t even work-related.

So I had to sit in this HR meeting and explain that I’m not required to invite coworkers I barely know to my literal wedding. That it’s a personal event. That it has nothing to do with work or who’s in the office.

HR honestly looked just as confused as I was. They basically said, “Yep, okay, thanks,” and closed the case.

But now she acts super passive-aggressive toward me. Like side-eyes, little digs when I walk by. Still bringing it up in these weird sarcastic comments like, “Some people are so inclusive these days.”

I can’t believe she actually thought HR could… what, make me invite her?

#15 “Friend” Gets Mad I Don’t Want To Deal With Her Broken Monitor

I had a “friend” renting a room in my house for a few months. Many things did not go well. At one point she asked me if I’d like a free computer monitor, but it was broken. I politely declined, but also asked why would I want a broken monitor? She just said she thought she would offer. What?? I just let it go after that, but she was really just trying to dump a broken monitor on to me so she didn’t have to deal with it.

When she was moving out the monitor was sitting on the floor in the middle of her room and I kept waiting for her to take it, but she just kept walking past it. She announced she was taking her last load of belongings out to her car and I just knew she was going to leave the broken monitor. I just played dumb and was like, “Oh, don’t forget your monitor!”

She said Oh it’s broken. I said, ok, but we can’t put electronics in the garbage here so you’ll have to recycle it. Then she says there’s not enough room in her car for it. There was. So I just grabbed it and said I think we can get it in your car.

Then she completely snapped at me and said, “Ya know you can just drop these off at Best Buy!” Ok, then you can do it! How is your broken monitor my responsibility??

#16 Whole New Level Of Entitled From A Friend

Received a text saying I am not a good enough friend because I can't give them as much emotional support as they need. After eleven calls in one day alone. What blew my mind was the "I'm not talking about the times you have been there for me, I'm talking about the times you haven't " referring to when I needed space to deal with the loss of a loved one. Still showed up to decorate for an entire party they planned and brought the food the day after the loss. That wasn't enough. I have never in all my adult years encountered this level of entitled from someone I knew. Dumped a friend. I'm still in shock. Thought I could pick them better!

#17 Friend Forgot My Birthday But Expects Me To Splurge For Hers.

My friend forgot my birthday this year, and it was the second time she's done this. For some context, we are in our early 20s, not married and no kids yet. I'm not a big birthday person and it wasn't a milestone year, so I asked a week before my birthday if she wanted to just grab lunch as it was a Sunday. She said she had a trip planned which was understandable. I ended up having dinner with another friend. And since it's a birthday, I will be required to buy a gift, too. Firstly, this took me by surprise because we never planned to celebrate together. Honestly, I'd never spend that much on one meal anyway as I just think it's kind of absurd. Especially, in this current economic climate where groceries are $$$. I also mentionedi to her a while ago that I'm on a tight budget as I'm saving towards a big purchase, alongside paying the usual bills. Not to mention, Christmas has just passed so it's been a period of spending on gifts and food.

Here's the thing, she just recently got a raise at work. So, she's been on kind of a spending spree as a reward. Am I justified in feeling a little ticked off that she just expects me to do the same and spend an absurd amount of money in celebrating her?

#18 Entitled Boss Fires Me, Still Wants To "Be Friends".

It's even worse than the title tbh. I've been this family's nanny for 3+ years. Youngest child is only 6. I took 6 days off (at their insistance) because I was having a miscarriage. The day before I was due to return, I got told "We've actually managed without you so could you just work tomorrow then we don't need you any more. But we can still be friends and meet up".

I worked that day. Picked up my stuff. Dropped off their keys. By the time I'd driven home she'd blown up my phone with messages saying "I'm upset TOO, you know!" I blocked her number. Now she's harassing my husband.

Hi So I (F20) am on a weight loss journey and have lost about 18 kg so far and for the first time in a long time, I actually like how I look in photos. I saw an ask reddit and it reminded me of a funny story from a little while ago.

I have a friend group that consists of me and three other girls, all of them have dark hair. We were planning a little trip for my friend who we’ll call Gina’s birthday, so it was us and then three of her other friends. Two of her friends also had dark hair except for who I’ll call Sheila.

#21 'Friend' Tells Me I'm A Horrible Person, Then Asks If They Can Swim In My Pool

Long story short, the person who was once my best friend and I had a huge falling out. Mostly over her boyfriend, who is not well liked amongst our former friend group. He is 'laid off' more often than he actually has a job, but refuses to look for a new one. He chain smokes, and is drunk before noon when left home alone. He also embarrasses her in public by talking about their s*x life.

She knows none of us can stand him, and has even made comments to the extent that his friends and family have written him off as a lost cause.

However I am the only one she told was a horrible friend/person when she was considering breaking up with him, and ALL of use told her she should. To be fair, I may have been a bit more blunt than the rest.

Now I have a pool, and normally we would all meet up to swim fairly regularly, but hadn't that year due to the fall out.

So, after 4 months of 0 contact, she texts me 'Let me know if you go swimming today.'

The nerve of some people.

Edit: Yes, I already realized she might be trying to reach out, but I think we can all agree that after 4 months a text that only says 'Let me know if go swimming today' and nothing else is a pretty lame attempt.

#22 Entitled "Friends" Asking Us To Sell My Husband's Car

So this story happened around 7 years ago, my husband (DH - 35M) and I (31F) were dating for a year. He was invited to a wedding of his two friends from uni (for the story they will be EG-34M and EB- 33F). EG was actually my husband's roommate for a year and from what he told me they were very close and friends with his parents too. So DH asked me to be plus 1 to wedding.

We went and it was a wedding where no money was saved. It was in the garden of an expensive hotel (like Hilton) and with full course meal, lots of drinks etc.

We were seated to a table far away from the bride& groom,not close to family and friends tables also. DH also didn't know anyone on the table. I was a bit irked but DH is a bit naive, so we gave our gifts and danced, had over all good time.

After wedding we learned that couple went to Maldives for a month for honeymoon.

2 weeks after the honeymoon, EG calls my husband and asks for a loan. He tells that his father's company is not going well and due to some tax reasons his father named EG as the owner so he is a lot of debt. His wife also doesn't have any savings, they just bought her a car.

DH tells him that he doesn't have much also, he can only spare 1000 euro but not more. EG tells him to sell his car and give them the money 😅🙃

DH comes and asks my opinion, he says they are in bad place etc. I'm like "audacity they have 😳" and ofc explained him they shouldn't have so expensive wedding, if they have money problems. And why don't they sell their own car??

At the end, he didn't give any money and we never heard from them again. Still puzzles me though, how can you be so entitled to ask someone to sell your car to pay your debt??

#23 Friend Excitedly Invited Myself And 8 Other Friends Over For Dinner Only To Ask For Us To Pay Her Back The Next Day…

I have a new friend from my grad school who has been constantly mentioning how she wants us over for dinner so she can “cook for us” so she finally set a date. Her menu of food was pretty lackluster and most of us contributed to her hosting by bringing nice wine and tequila while leaving her one bottle as a hostess gift. The next day she sends us all a message asking if we can pitch in $10 each to cover some of the food cost and to cover the cost of her roommate’s tequila which we didn’t even know was opened.

I reluctantly sent her the $10 as did some of my other friends even though I had a few friends think if was absolutely ridiculous to do so they completely avoided sending her anything.

Since then I have sent her a message requesting her to let us know if she expects compensation especially if she is PURPOSEFULLY inviting us and to also let us know if we are using her roommates items which we are expected to pay for.

I got a lukewarm response from her and now I can’t help but think she is tacky and has bad etiquette.

#24 Friend Invites Herself To My Romantic Getaways

I was dating a flight attendant, Steve, who was based near a very touristic city. We had been meeting halfway and traveled to other places together for long weekends. He visited me on his time off as well. One time I visited him at his hometown and had a great time. I met his friends and liked them a lot and they seemed to like me as well. Like myself he lived very frugally with a goal to retire in a few years. He had a 2 bedroom condo and rented the guest room on Airbnb for extra income.

When I got back my friend Savannah calls to see how my trip went. I fill her in on how much I enjoyed his town and friends and that we became much closer during my visit. I only knew Savannah in group situations and never hung out with her long enough to get a sense of her personality. My initial thought was that she was being a supportive friend.

The next night she calls again and tells me she wants to come along with me the next time I see Steve. I tell her no, that we like our privacy. She asks about when the guest room is vacant. I tell her the only time it’s not rented out is when his kids visit.

This is when I learn she doesn’t like taking no for an answer. She calls me a third night and asks if I can ask him to ask his friends if she can stay with them. I tell I feel like that would be a major imposition and that I won’t ask him. I did a reality check with a few coworkers to see if I was off base. They suggested she was out of bounds and not to further the friendship.

She calls me a day or so after asking if she can stay at his friend’s places with a new angle. She starts by asking if Steve plans to visit me soon. I tell her yes and she says I should have a party so our friends can get to know him. I tell her that I might do that but don’t have definitive plans for the visit. She doubles down and tells me I should think more seriously about a party. I tell her I’ll think about it. Then she tells me that she wants the opportunity to ask him if she can visit him with me and ask him if he can ask his friends if she can stay with them. I felt she was suggesting that if I don’t ask him privately she will ask him publicly when it would be awkward for him to say no to her. I didn’t talk to her for a year after that. If she hadn’t been in my friend group I would have ended the ‘friendship’.

#25 Entitled Friend Drops Me Because I Didn’t Give Her My Disney Plus Login

So this happened a few years ago and I never clocked it as entitled behaviour rip. To start out, yes I know I was naive but please go easy on a lonely girl doing online university.

I had a friend in university (during COVID) and we would chat all the time and totally would not do our online tests together or anything (😉🫣). For the most part the friendship was equal with give and take until it came to when she mentioned a show she wanted to watch on Amazon prime video, I had an account and she didn’t have an account but I did, so I have her my login to use for that show. After a bit we didn’t talk as much as before since she graduated earlier than I did and we didn’t have classes together anymore. But after a few months of not talking much at all she asked if I still had my Disney plus account and said yes and she proceeded to ask for my login, which I said no, I already gave you my amazon prime video login for free. She said that didn’t have the show she wanted to watch and really wanted me Disney plus login, to which I said I wasn’t comfortable giving that out for free and even offered to split the cost of the account with her because mine was going to expire and I didn’t know if I wanted to renew it. Well anyways, she ghosted me completely after I didn’t giver my login rip.

#26 Friend Expected Me To Pay For His New GF Holiday

A friend and I had booked a holiday, he found a GF just before and insisted she came as well. Then after I had asked about re-spliting the accommodation costs, he informed me that he expected that I would still split the entire holiday costs 50/50 as I originally agreed - which now included his GFs costs - because he wasn't going to let her pay for anything. He expected me to fork out half of his new GFs activities, food, accommodation etc and I'd never met her.

I ended up pulling out, told him I was cancelling the accommodation (it was booked in my name only) and he got angry and told me since I was 'changing the rules' I had to still pay for half the accommodation as it was already paid for.

The fall out was ...... interesting. I cancelled, told him that the accommodation woukd be held for him for 72 hours. He tried to get cheaper accommodation, and failed - but didn't ensure the hotel knew he was still interested. He lost the hold, I returned his money, but he had booked non-refundable flights and failed to get travel insurance (I have told him to), do was out $3200 - which he has demanded I pay him for "ruining his and his GFs holiday".

#27 Friend Wants Me To Illustrate For Free

A friend I took and art class with for a year or two had this colourful Idea one day to write a book and for me to be the illustrator, at the time I was not really all that busy but still gave him a strong maybe. Eventually he is at a writers block and just gives up. I assume that he wasn't all that serious about it and forgot all about it.

Sixish months had passed since school ended when I get a text from him asking if I would like to illustrate for his book for free. Since then I had gotten into an online college course and a job, I am pretty swamped. Naturally I say "I don't know man, I am hella swamped and just do not have time for this." I really do not like saying no, so I was trying to let them off easy whilst not seeming completely uninterested in his project. He gives me a run down and I am just terribly uninterested I tell him It is a cool idea but again I am really busy.

The next day there is a new message, it describes the character to me, like commisioning an OC to be drawn, and the most hysterical part is he expects this character to be designed, finalised, sketched, and done in two motherloving days. Which is ofc impossible. I confirm this with him, but atlas now he just wants the heads to be drawn, still very impossible and definitely not worth the price of being completely free. I explain the situation one last time yet he holds out hope.

TLDR: Friend wants me to draw for his book for free with the idealistic budget of paying me nothing and with the deadline of two days, despite being told my life is pretty busy.

#28 My Friend Won’t Get License And Won’t Ever Give Me Gas Money

I’ve had my license for a little over a year now, i got it right after i turned 16. My friend has all her drive times finished, all the practice hours and meets every requirement but WILL NOT take the test for some reason… so for the past year i’ve driven us everywhere and she never helps with gas or anything and obviously we can’t take turns driving to even it out. Whenever i mention her getting her license she gets mad, whenever i mention her helping paying for gas she gets mad. #29 My Friend Got Mad At Me For Telling Her A Tool She Hasn’t Tried Yet Is Actually Terrible

I (26F) work in a small office and often get stuck testing new tools my boss wants to implement in our workplace. Last week, he told me tets this AI-ish demo tool to see if it could work for our setup. I spent hours using it and it was… bad. Slow, glitchy, barely any customization, and the analytics were basically useless. I honestly can’t imagine anyone thinking it’s amazing.

My friend, also a (26F), is a freelance designer who’s recently been obsessed with productivity tools and reels about “life-changing AI.” She came across this same tool and immediately decided it could be used to transform her workflow without trying it herself. She told me she planned to use it everywhere: her portfolio, client demos, even her CV link. I suggested she test it once before fully committing, based on my experience.

And then she lost it. She accused me of being negative, of “crushing her motivation,” and said I always “bring down her ideas.” She acted like I personally attacked her career because I gave an honest opinion about a tool she hadn’t even used. She started giving me the silent treatment.

So I called her to talk and sort things out. Instead of listening, she said something really mean about a recent client project I had handled. I told her she was being unfair, but she continued to escalate, bringing more people into the argument over messages and trying to shame me in front of them. At that point, I cut the call, blocked her everywhere, and shut her off.

Now I have over 50 missed blocked calls from her.

I still want to fix this because I don’t want to lose a friendship over something like this, but it’s exhausting to deal with something like this.

#30 Friend Asked Me To Watch Her Cat For A Week, She’s Across Town No Compensation And Then Laughs When I Ask To Use Her Washer

I think I just want to vent cus I feel a little Upset but anyways y’all tell me

So my friend, Mika and I have been friends, though not close friends, for about tow years. We met at the gym and really get along, however She often disappears when she’s in a new relationship and hence why we aren’t super close.

Well recently she came back into my Life and hung out. During this time she asked me to come watch her cat who is 19 years old while she is out of town and to move her car. Mind you, she lives across town and I am just a recent graduate and pretty broke as I am looking for a job. Mika, has a job and is currently living on her own in a nice apartment, though I think struggling with money to pay a high rent.

I say sure because her cat is sweet and old and I don’t want her to be alone. First she just asks about her cat and then all Of a sudden as it gets closer she then mentions she also needs to move her car during street cleaning. I get it, don’t want a ticket. Mind you, no compensation or pay, not even an offer for some gas $ to do all this and I’m like okay maybe it’s cuz she’s broke.

She tells me to make myself at home but clean up after myself- which I am very clean. But she does say do not eat any of her food I’m like okay? Lol. I only go over for a few hours each day because I’m pretty busy myself with job searching, friends and my own cat. I also have like on call jobs. She

I go over and see she has a washing machine and I’m like Oo it’s expensive to wash and my unit doesn’t have one so I have to take ir somewhere. So we FaceTime so she can see her cat and I say hey! Can I bring my laundry here? And she straight up laughs and says “girl I pay the water bill so no. That’s funny”. Tbh I didn’t think it was too much to ask,

Needless to say I probably won’t ever offer to do anything like this for her ever again. If it was me, I’d offer someone gas, or food or my laundry machine if i could, guess we’re just different.

A couple months ago, my roommate’s laptop broke right before she started a remote job. She was freaking out, so she asked to borrow mine for just a few weeks until she could afford her own. I wasn’t using it much at the time, so I said sure. Just trying to help. it’s been over two months she’s been using my laptop every day to work, make money, hold meetings, everything. I finally told her I needed it back for my own stuff. And she hits me with, You’re not even using it for work, so why can’t I keep using it? Like what the hell? She’s literally been making money off something she borrowed, and now she’s acting like I’m wrong for wanting my own shit back. No signs of buying hers. No thank you. Just attitude. #32 My Fling From 5 Years Ago Is Mad At Me

I, 28F have been with my current boyfriend John (name changed) for the past three years. He has been my rock, and I hope to marry him.

5 years ago, I had a fling with a former college mate. Funnily, he shares the same name as my current boyfriend. We went out on two dates, but he never called me after that so I assumed it fizzled. Tbh I'm very glad now that he made no attempt to contact me after the two dates.

For some godforsaken reason, John the fling was highly offended by this. He said 'if you wanted to end up with a John, I was right there'. (Like people with the same name are interchangeable). I politely reminded him that he never called me back. He said that he was waiting for me to call him, and I never did, so he gave up. I could have called him, but honestly I wasn't feeling it.

He made a few unwarranted taunts over text after that, and to protect my peace I simply blocked him. No more of that in 2026.

My boyfriend simply found it amusing and while he has made a joke about it, we've both taken it in a positive spirit.

PS: not that it matters, but I should clarify that the name is an extremely common name here in India.

#33 I’m Banned From My Friends House For Asking To Sit Next To Their Roomate On The Couch

I live in (drum roll for stereotypes pls) Portland Oregon

I’d come to find out that mutuals had blocked me and because nothing happened between me and these individuals I decided to ask their roomate what occurred and here’s the story

*ahem*

they blocked me because on one occasion, months ago, i had been in the same room as these individuals and a couple others. we were all in the living room. I had walked into the living room and noticed there was only a spot on a couch, next to an acquaintance i’d talked to a couple of times. I didn’t immediately sit down and instead asked “Hey can i sit there?”
i was told “No” and i was pretty shocked but i just said okay and sat on the floor instead. No pushback, i didn’t make a fuss of any sort. Just sat on the floor and talked to all these people. Conversation was sweet and nothing out of the ordinary.

Come to find out two people in that room are extremely angry that i “Didn’t respect the acquaintances boundaries” (??) and have now declared im never allowed over and i’m blocked on everything. Not being allowed over is insane because im best friends with their roomate which is why i was there in the first place. I was never ever told about this persons boundaries nor did they ever tell me about them themselves. When told “no” i sat away from this person on the hard ground while they had an entire couch to themselves. A similar incident has never happened after the fact nor was this “incident” ever brought up to me.

#34 Friend Forgot My Bday Two Years In A Row But Expects Me To Remember & Acknowledge Hers

She is in her late 20’s, single & child free. I am in my early 30’s, married & have 1 toddler. We rarely hang out in person but we do text each other almost every single day and I would consider her a close friend, but after yet another forgotten birthday I’m starting to rethink my friendship with her.

To be clear I don’t expect anything big for my birthday from any of my friends. A text message is all I’d ask, and I don’t even ask for that. I have had several friends send belated birthday texts and apologies for forgetting because they were so busy and honestly I get that and I appreciate the honesty.

The reason why this bothers me with this friend in particular is because she expects everyone in her life to go all out for her birthday with a week long planned vacation trip, wish lists for gifts with links that she sends people, and obnoxious social media posts, and yet she can’t be bothered to send me a simply happy birthday text??

She is the type of person to throw a housewarming party every time she moves into a new apartment, which is twice per year. She also didn’t attend my baby shower because she wanted to attend her brothers football game instead, and when I bought a house she didn’t say anything to me. Be so for real right now…. I’m so over it.

#35 My Entitled Friends

My wife and I have friends (also neighbors) that have recently started to act so very entitled.

The most recent example happened yesterday. We live in a Midwest state but our little village has an amazing fresh fish shop. It’s very well known in our larger city and constantly recognized with awards. The shop is always closed on Mondays.

Well, last Monday we planned on fish for dinner. Completely forget the day of the week (I’m retired, it happens) and so I pull into the small parking lot for the fish shop. Big sign - CLOSED. Then I realize it’s a Monday. Ok, no big deal, we’ll do fish on Tuesday.

At that moment our friends walk out of the store with their package of fish. I’m confused and ask “how?” The neighbor wife tells me, “we knew they were closed on Mondays but we pulled in, walked up and saw the owner inside so we knocked and walked in.”

These people knew the business was closed, pulled into the parking lot anyway, walked up to the front door and saw the owner inside. They walked in to empty refrigerated display cases and assumed they’d be taken care of.

When I wondered aloud if the owner would do the same for me (we shop there frequently), the neighbor wife tells me, “they’re closed.”

Apparently not for the entitled people.

#36 My “Friend” Won’t Pay Me Back For Drinks Because She Has Bills To Pay

So I was recently with a good friend of mine and one of her friends from college for the weekend. We went out to bars the first night and each took turns buying rounds for everybody, but the next morning we spent forever trying to figure out who owed what to who so I announced that we should handle our own drinks for the following night, which everyone agreed with. That went mostly to plan except one place towards the end of the night where we all ordered our drinks and then they (drunkenly) went to the bathroom right after ordering. When the bartender came up to me with the drinks and asked for payment, that was when I noticed they were gone, so I just put my card down for all of the drinks not thinking it would be a big deal. Well I spent the next few days reminding them over and over again that they each owed me $15 for these drinks, to which I was met with “yeah ok” but no actual money was sent. For context, these girls are freshly graduated from college paid for by their parents and have been paying rent for the first time in their lives for only a couple of months, while I have handled my own rent/bills for 5 years but currently am living nomadically in my van. So after about a week of hounding them for this money they finally tell me that they won’t be paying me back because they are “broke” and have to save up to pay bills at the end of the month. I try to remind them that all adults have bills to pay and that is not an excuse to not pay me back to which they remind me that I don’t have to pay rent unlike them. Right, because I live in a van they need that $30 wayyy more than me I guess

#37 My Entitled Friend Calls Me Creepy For Helping My Sister When She Broke Her Arm

I(21f) live alone with my sister(15f) and she broke her arm and needs help doing certain things

The other day when I was helping my sister bathe my friend who lives right next to me shows up to return a movie she borrowed from me. I answered the door and she started asking what I was up to. When I told her that I had been helping my sister bathe since she broke her arm she flipped out. She started calling me a creep and said that I shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near my sister.

She stormed off and my sister asks if she was doing anything wrong since she heard the conversation. I assured her that she wasn’t. When I arrive at work the next day everyone was giving me dirty looks while talking to my friend(she also works there).

#38 Friend Told Me I Shouldn't Get Married Where I Wanted To If Not Everyone Could Attend

I was planning my wedding years ago and talking to a friend about how we wanted to do it on a boat. Due to it being potentially on a boat, we were limited to the number of guests. She immediately said we were being selfish and should do it in a place that could accommodate everyone; however, it was my dream to have it on a boat and since my fiancé and I were paying for the entire thing we were fixed in our budget.

Granted, nothing was set in stone because we were only in the beginning planning stages and we were still looking at options, but it rubbed me the wrong way because it was supposed to be about what we wanted and not her, so I ended up ghosting her as a friend.

We ended up having the wedding on a boat, had a great time with the party going on until the sun came up the next day. So was ITAH, or was she entitled? Still annoys me 20+ years later.

UPDATE: I do not think of this all the time or harp on it. This was actually the first time I thought of it in years. I think scrolling through posts from Entitled People made me think of it.

#39 I Was Sick At Home, And My Friend Still Expected Me To Help Her Move

I came down with a fever and chest congestion — the full viral cocktail. I let my friend know a few days ahead that I wouldn’t be able to help her move anymore. She didn’t respond. The morning of her move, I woke up to five missed calls and a text that said, “If you cared about me at all, you’d be here.” Mind you, I couldn’t even walk to the kitchen without coughing my lungs out. When I called to explain again, she said I was “making excuses” and accused me of always flaking. I’ve helped her with everything in the past — birthdays, breakups, errands, drama. #40 My Entitled Friend Volunteered Me To Dog Sit For Him On New Years Eve And Day

Hello, I just need to vent and need some feedback about this situation.

My friend messaged me yesterday asking if I could dog sit for Saturday night and Sunday night (New Years Eve), until Monday as he goes out of town to celebrate. I told him I couldn’t because I had just watched his dog for 2.5 weeks earlier in December and didn’t want my landlord to have a problem with it but I could make just one night work. He said no worries and that he definitely needs someone to watch his dog for 2 nights. I later messaged him and said “I’m sorry I couldn’t help out. I hope you found someone to watch him. Have fun this weekend!” He replied back saying “Thanks!”

This morning, I got a text from his friend that I barely know asking what time he could drop off the dog to me. Apparently my friend had planned with him that he would watch the dog on Saturday night and I would watch Sunday night.

Anyways, I felt stressed out after calling him and not hearing from him for 4 hours and then snapped and sent a text letting my friend know that he is selfish for assuming I could just watch his dog, misleading his friend and that he’s screwing around with plans that both his friend and I had made and leaving his responsibilities with us. I decided to end the friendship because this isn’t the first time this has happened where my friend just assumes and volunteers me to help out with things without checking with me. He replied back with letting me know he found someone else to watch the dog for tonight and totally gaslit me about how I felt.

Was I wrong to snap and end the friendship? I don’t think I am because I don’t want someone like him in my life. He makes me feel like I’m being used and like I’m his assistant (not his friend). He asks me to help clean his house and a bunch of other odd jobs. I think he takes advantage of my helpful and kind personality. I snapped at him because my anger was building up for a while. We have had multiple conversations before about how I feel used.

What are your thoughts? Needless to say, he kind of ruined today for me as I spent the day in conflict with him. It just ruined my mood completely.

I was working today from 9am to 2pm. My friend, who knew I was at work, messaged me. When I didnt respond she started getting funny. Sending messages blaming parents, me and then being petty enough to say "you know what, Im not going near that food truck ever, take a hint. I've got my own stuff to deal with on top of this." (the take a hint was without context). Why should I stop working and risk getting fired to message her back because she's going through something. So when I was eventually off work I messaged back "no, how about YOU take a hint. I'm at work, I can't message back when. I'm. Working".

#42 Friend Tried To Trick Me Into Babysitting

This happened long ago, but even after 25 years I can't wrap my head around it. My husband and I were graduate students and we, like most of our friends, lived on a low budget. One of our classmates was engaged to a guy with a lot of money--think hot-shot stockbroker in the late 1990s. He was clearly training her in The Ways of the Entitled. They had a little boy together.

We didn't see them much because we couldn't afford most of the restaurants or events they suggested. My friend, however, acted like we were just avoiding her no matter how much we reminded her the costs were out of reach for us.

One Saturday evening, she called and started out with: "We haven't hung out in so long. How about you two come over and we'll get a pizza or something." I said we'd love to come. Then she said, "Great. And after you put [3 yr old] to bed, you can just watch a movie or something."

I was confused and asked why we would put her son to bed. Weren't we going to hang out? She replied, "Oh, fiancé and I are going to a party in the neighborhood. We'd invite you to come along but the hosts don't even know you and that would be awkward. But we should have time to chat before we leave."

I said I didn't want to be her free babysitter. She got annoyed and said it wasn't free because they'd get us a pizza. I said 'no thanks' and she was so shocked--"WHAT?! Now you're not coming? What are we supposed to do now?" Keep in mind it had been only about 40 seconds since I figured out she expected us to babysit.

I imagine she spent the party complaining about the friends who were supposed to watch her kid but bailed on the the last minute.

#43 Entitled Friend Feels She Deserves To Be Invited To My Birthday As Our Other Friends Are Going

For my birthday I planned to go to a driving range with some friends.

The driving range in question allows 6 people to play in a bay but 8 people can attend.

As a result, I invited 4 of my closest friends and my girlfriend. While out with 2 of these friends I invited our other friend to tag along and explained the couldn’t play. He was fine with this as he isn’t the sporty type but I didn’t plan on inviting an 8 person as I’d feel bad explaining that they could come but wouldn’t be able to play.

However, when one of my friends I hardly speak to found out about the driving range she got one of my friends invited to message me saying she doesn’t mind not playing.

I don’t talk to this friend often. The last time we spoke was her asking me for car help then getting annoyed when I wouldn’t get ready at 10pm to come try to sort an issue with her car when I’m not a mechanic and was working the next day.

Anytime we are out she feels entitled to an invite and will message us privately asking why she wasn’t invited. She has even messaged me when I’ve been out with family asking who I was with and told me she was going to argue with me if I had said some of our friends.

#44 Friend Acting Weird Because I Don’t Want To Drive For A 4 Hour Round Trip

So I have friend A and friend B. Friend B lives in a city 2 hours away and she is having a leaving party as she’s moving abroad and she invited me and A.

Me and A usually hang out and would be going to visit our friend together. Now I drive but A does not. The thing is I want to enjoy myself that day so decided not to drive to the city. I’ve been the designated driver for me and A and she never offers gas which I didn’t mind In the beginning but for long trips I have to ask her directly. She never offers.

As I want to drink, have fun and genuinely not dread focusing on the road for 2 hours there and 2 hours back she keeps questioning why I don’t want to drive. I’ve reiterated above and now she’s being weird as if she doesn’t want to go.

We literally could and I was hoping to take the train there. It’s not that serious. I feel like she doesn’t want to pay for a ticket and was banking on me driving there for free.

Also another thing A is unemployed. She has been for a few months and has made it her whole personality. She’s on government assistance till she finds a job. I know it’s not enough but it’s not like she’s starving. Plus she likes to brag to me that her friend likes to buy her random things off her Amazon wish list and gushes about it to me which just disgusts me in a way because the friend seems like lovely girl who clearly feels sorry for my friend.

What shall I do if she says she’s not going anymore? Shall I let B know? The thing is A introduced me to B so I don’t want it to be awkward

#45 Entitled Friend Claims Me Getting Physically Fit Makes Her Depression Worst

Hi guys, I've been a lurker in reddit for so long and I finally have the courage to post something.

I (17,F) am unfit. Though I'm not fat (49 kg), my body is not toned and firm. I admit, I do lack the exercise and so that is why I decided that I'd work out.

I decided to work out on late January and I could see the little progress that I made. My friend (let's call her A) noticed it too when I posted some pictures of me working out on facebook.

A is a little on the heavier side. She's a good friend and I've known her since 6th grade. She always tried to exercise and have a healthier diet but usually, she gives up in a week or two.

A: Hey, I see you're working out. Why would you do that?

Me: I just wanna get toned lol.

A: Stop it.

A: Stop working out!! You're making my depression worst.

Me: I'm sorry? How is me working out make you depress?

A: Don't act like you don't know. Stop flaunting your body and stop exercing you bitch!! If you're really my friend, you'd quit. Stop contributing to my anxiety and depression!!

Before I could respond, she already blocked me. Well, okay then.

Edit: So A decided to tell our mutual friends about this and now some of them had been calling me to just give her what she wants and to stop being so insensitive. I don't know what to do anymore.

Edit 2: So I finally was able to talk to her and she told me that she no longer wants to be friends with someone like me. I apologised that I offended her and even invited her to work out with me but she said her words are final. I'm devastated to think that 5 years of friendship was gone. Thank you so much for your kind words everyone.

#46 Stopped Being Friends With Someone And They Won’t Leave My House

I found out one of my friends is fake and talks about me behind my back. I asked her for space and told her she made me uncomfortable, she agreed to this. Less than 24 hours later she showed up at my house and has been hanging out with my younger sister day and night non stop for a week now. I have anxiety leaving my room to use the bathroom or go to the kitchen because I end up running into her.

I feel uncomfortable in my own home and I don’t know what to do. I asked my parents to ask her to leave but they said they didn’t want to make my sister angry and “you have no right to feel comfortable since you don’t pay rent”. I’ve asked her to leave multiple times but it doesn’t work. I don’t know what sane person would feel comfortable being in someone’s house when they know they aren’t wanted and just ended a friendship with them. I really don’t know where to go from here. I’m having trouble sleeping and doing my homework. Also she has a home and other friends she can be at, she chooses to pretty much live here.

C'est le chercheur BobDaHacker qui a signalé le trou début janvier et si vous savez compter, oui oui, il a bien fallu 6 mois pour que quelqu'un daigne le boucher. Que voulez-vous, les voies du Seigneur sont impénétrables et visiblement sa boîte mail aussi.

L'appli avait été lancée par le pape François en 2019 depuis le balcon de la place Saint-Pierre, tablette brandie devant la foule. Elle appartient au Réseau Mondial de Prière du Pape, une fondation du Vatican, et tourne sur iOS, Android et en version web en 7 langues.

La faille se situait au niveau de l'adresse api.clicktopray.org/user/users/{id} qui renvoyait la fiche complète de n'importe quel compte, prénom, nom, pays, adresse mail, date de naissance et rôle. Aucune authentification demandée, il suffisait de taper l'adresse dans un navigateur.

Les identifiants étant séquentiels et le débit n'étant pas limité, une simple boucle sur les 719 517 numéros suffisait à aspirer le fichier entier. Une requête par fidèle, comme pour l' ANTS ^^. Vous le savez maintenant, ça s'appelle un IDOR, pour Insecure Direct Object Reference et c'est quand le serveur vérifie que vous êtes bien connecté, mais jamais que les données réclamées vous appartiennent. Eh bien ici, il ne vérifiait même pas la première moitié.

BobDaHacker explique pourquoi la boulette revient sans arrêt : "la plupart des frameworks gèrent l'authentification pour vous, mais pas l'autorisation. Ils vérifient "est-ce que cette personne est connectée ?", mais pas "est-ce qu'elle a le droit de voir cette ressource précise ?"". Pourtant c'est la base, mais bon, bref...

Ce type de contrôle d'accès défaillant trône en tête de l'OWASP Top 10 depuis 2021, et l'IDOR en est probablement la variante la plus répandue. Pour apprendre à les repérer, je vous avais même montré WebGoat .

Ce qui est marrant, c'est que dans la base, le champ date de naissance s'appelle borned_date, ce qui n'est de l'anglais dans aucune langue. Et le rôle attribué au fidèle lambda, c'est "PRAYER". Votre fonction de péon sur l'application de prière du Pape, c'est donc prière. Ahaha !

Le vrai risque maintenant n'est pas vraiment la fuite en elle-même, mais plutôt ce qu'un escroc va pouvoir faire avec 700 000 adresses de ces gens inscrits pour prier, avec une institution de confiance à usurper. Un mail annonçant que le Saint-Père sollicite votre attention urgente, avec un lien qui imite celui du Saint-Siège, ça fonctionnera très bien je pense...

Dark Reading, qui a confirmé la faille de son côté, a noté que les identifiants les plus bas sont ceux des employés. Les premiers exposés étaient donc ceux qui auraient dû corriger. Mais le bouquet les amis, c'est l'authentification des mails. Ceux de l'appli ratent les contrôles de domaine, SPF, DKIM ou DMARC étant mal réglés, au point que la boîte du chercheur les a marqués comme suspects.

L'application officielle du Vatican envoyant donc déjà des mails qui ressemblent à du hameçonnage, un escroc qui n'aurait pas peur d'aller en enfer, n'a même pas besoin de soigner son imitation.

Arrive la partie qui pique de cette remontée de vuln... Le 3 janvier, BobDaHacker écrit à 9 personnes, l'adresse info générale, 6 membres du staff de clicktopray.org + 2 contacts du Réseau Mondial de Prière.

Puis il attend mais aucune réponse ne vient.

Alors rien ne bouge durant 6 mois. Puis en juillet il passe le dossier à Nate Nelson, de Dark Reading, qui contacte le service de presse. Silence là aussi. Alors l'article sort le 24 juillet, et Ô miracle (ça arrive parfois, oui oui) la faille est bouchée dans la foulée, sans un mot. Le chercheur l'a appris dans les commentaires Reddit qui parlaient de sa découverte.

Mais je vous garde le meilleur pour la fin, attendez... Ce que vous ne savez pas c'est que le Vatican s'est doté de son propre règlement de protection des données personnelles en avril 2024. Ça s'appelle le décret n° DCLVII et il réclame des "mesures de sécurité appropriées" et désigne nommément ceux qui doivent les appliquer. Ce décret a bien été promulgué, puis visiblement rangé dans un tiroir.

Ah et visiblement, l'URL qui leake continue toujours de répondre sans authentification mais ne renvoie plus que l'identifiant, le prénom et le nom. L'adresse mail a disparu, comme la date de naissance et le pays. Donc c'est un genre de demi-correctif puisque les noms restent énumérables un par un sans le moindre compte. Le chercheur juge ça acceptable sur une plateforme où l'on prie "ensemble". Moué, pourquoi pas.

Voilà, donc si vous avez un compte là-bas, partez du principe que votre adresse mail a circulé et que vous risquez d'avoir des appels du Pape, voire de Dieu lui-même qui vous demandera sûrement un virement en urgence. Je vais prier pour vous afin que ça n'arrive pas, mais sachez que ce scénario de la lose, je vous en parlais déjà à propos de la divulgation coordonnée de vulnérabilités , et il ne change jamais. Le chercheur alerte, l'éditeur ignore, et c'est la presse qui finit par débloquer....

Et BobDaHacker, lui, attend toujours son merci. Snif...
